Another computer infected with trojan.dropper.bcminer!

Recommended Posts

Wow, I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I am having what appears to be a problem with the abovementioned trojan. I do appreciate this forum and I will try to appreciate the fact that all you folks out there helping are unpaid and potentially underappreciated.

Anyway, this is me following the forum directions.

Here's the mbam scan log. I'm using a trial because while infected I'd rather not log credit card info / paypal acct passwords. Let me know if this needs to change.

I see a new trojan.dropper.bcminer every time I restart my computer and run the scan again. Even in safe mode.

Welcome to the forum.

Your computer is infected with a nasty rootkit. Please read the following information first.

You're infected with Rootkit.ZeroAccess, a BackDoor Trojan.

BACKDOOR WARNING

------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is known to use a backdoor.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would advice you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the infection has been identified and because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

I will try my best to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

-----------------------------------------

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.

Hi MrC. Thanks for getting back to me. 2 quick questions from someone that isn't as savvy with this stuff: should I be using another computer to get these scan/diagnostic tools you will be having me run (instead of the infected one I'm currently using) and is the reformat/reinstall option something I need to see a professional about?

Anyway, here is the frst log.

should I be using another computer to get these scan/diagnostic tools you will be having me run (instead of the infected one I'm currently using)

NO

and is the reformat/reinstall option something I need to see a professional about?

You should be able to do it yourself

-------------------------------------------

services.exe is infected and has to be replaced:

C:\Windows\System32\services.exe 014A9CB92514E27C0107614DF764BC06 ZeroAccess <==== ATTENTION!.

In Vista or Windows 7: Boot to System Recovery Options and run FRST.

Type the following in the edit box after "Search:".

services.exe

It then should look like:

Search: services.exe

Click Search button and post the log (Search.txt) it makes to your reply.

We'll clean up the rest with ComboFix.......

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

MrC, I seem to have a problem. I thought I had uninstalled McAfee Antivirus/Antispyware, since it was using 100% of my system resources and not actually removing the trojan/rootkit. I search for it and can't find it on my computer, yet Combofix has alerted me that I have the following real-time scanners to be active:

antivirus: McAfee

antispyware: McAfee

Any thoughts on this problem?

Again, I'm still confused about the McAfee issue (the first few lines of the log show enabled/updated) since I uninstalled the program and a simple search shows that mcafee.exe does not exist on my computer.

Anyway, thanks for all the help so far, MrC. Would you be willing to give me an idea of the total time you spent on my malware repair/removal if/when we finish this process? For the purposes of the donation...

This is what is in CF header, what one or ones do you no longer have??

these three stem from the same program, I think, the McAfee AV software that came with this computer on purchase, which I recently activated, and then removed before coming to this forum for help. The fourth item (Windows Defender) I am clueless about. My only guess is that it has to do with my firewall which I have had trouble toggling.

Anyway, this is the log; I also deleted from quarantine the ~7 trojan.dropper.bcminer labelled items I found there (from previous scans I guess)

In terms of how my computer is running, I don't have get redirects using google to navigate to webpages. That was the only symptom of the virus I noticed. I would like to believe my computer is fine, but would love your help in verifying that.

Thanks again.

OK, we have to use ComboFix to get them....

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

4. If ComboFix wants to update.....please allow it to.

SecCenter::

AV: McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware *Enabled/Updated* {86355677-4064-3EA7-ABB3-1B136EB04637}

SP: McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware *Enabled/Updated* {3D54B793-665E-3129-9103-206115370C8A}

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix while it is running. It may cause it to stall.

After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot)......

Please provide the contents of the ComboFix log (C:\ComboFix.txt) in your next reply.

I'm ready for more of this wild ride, though I had hoped it was over. Is there going to be any way to tell when I can use my computer for sensitive stuff?

Thanks MrC, as always.

Since I got rid of McAfee (as I mentioned it was using 100% of my system resources and reminding me every 5 minutes that it had removed a trojan) I don't know what I will do for AV. I think buying MBAM pro will be my first step, not letting anyone fileshare on this computer would be a second step, and from there, I'm open to suggestions.

Can we do an 'online scan' as you recommended for someone else on this forum with the 0access rootkit as a way of being more sure the computer is no longer compromised through a back door? Or is there just no way to tell with any certainty?

Here's what I suggest you do to.......

Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials as your anti-virus, it's FREE:

http://windows.micro...rity-essentials

I would also suggest you purchase Malwarebytes Pro.

With both of those, you'll be well protected. (That's what I use, BTW)

After you get MSE installed, update it and do a Full scan.

What do you think?? MrC

Well, in terms of what I think, I'm assuming there is never going to be 100% certainty with regards to this computer, as you stated in the quote in your first post.

I installed MSE and ran a full scan, which took over 5 hours. The scan showed 5 trojans and a virus on the computer, but when I looked at the details they seemed to be quarantined by FRST. This is strange to me because FRST is, as I understand it, just a diagnostic tool. Anyway, I copied all of the data MSE gave me (would be nice if it actually made a log) and the details of each infection into a notepad document. This is it:

Trojan:Win64/Sirefef

file:C:\FRST\Quarantine\{b0a6bc0e-032c-3f56-9e01-cc51ae2bcec7}\U\00000004.@

file:C:\FRST\Quarantine\{b0a6bc0e-032c-3f56-9e01-cc51ae2bcec7}\U\000000cb.@

Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.AA

file:C:\FRST\Quarantine\{b0a6bc0e-032c-3f56-9e01-cc51ae2bcec7}\U\80000064.@

Trojan:Win32/Sirefef.AN

file:C:\FRST\Quarantine\{b0a6bc0e-032c-3f56-9e01-cc51ae2bcec7}\U\80000032.@

Virus:Win64/Sirefef.B

file:C:\FRST\Quarantine\services.exe

Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.W

file:C:\FRST\Quarantine\{b0a6bc0e-032c-3f56-9e01-cc51ae2bcec7}\U\80000000.@

Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.P

file:C:\FRST\Quarantine\Desktop.ini

----end----

I selected the option to remove the quarantined files, and now my quick scans (MSE and MBAM) are clear. I am still not sure if I'm well and truly done with this. Thanks for all the help so far, MrC.

Those are all OK, just that MSE found the items in the quarantine folder.

You're "Good To Go" :)

---------------------------------------

A little clean up to do....

Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)

Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"

Copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

cf2.jpg

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point

---------------------------------

Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com

Save it to your desktop.

Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)

Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.

IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, etc....

-------------------------------

Any questions...please post back.

If you think I've helped you, please leave a comment > click on my avatar picture > click Profile Feed.

Take a look at My Preventive Maintenance to avoid being infected again.

Good Luck and Thanks for using the forum, MrC
