  1. As the computer is currently running OK, I'm going to leave it a while, as my husband really needs to use it rather than the laptop. When he has another slack time, I will reload the OS as you suggest. Vielen Danke! Judy
  2. Daniel, I've mended most of the icons, however I can't get the word or the IE icons on the taskbar to return to their proper state. Excel and powerpoint were fine, but the word icon which is fine on the desktop, changes to the ie picture when I pin it to the taskbar, and I have no idea on the IE one! Log files as requested. 3. :) :) :) I got it to run from the safe mode menu, and it seems to have done the trick. I have got a number of shortcuts on the desktop which are still an ie picture, but they seem to work OK. Thank you so much for helping. I still don't know whether it was a virus or a corruption, but I don't think I'ld have managed to have the patience to fix it without your help, and would probably have wiped the disk. Regards Judy

  5. Sorry, I don't understand the question - what are .ink files? The pop-ups seem to appear if i try and run anything like explorer, system restore, games as well as the shortcuts from the desktop. Oddly i can't run explorer directly, but if I go into my computer, and look at the disk i can access the files from there. I assume that there is a subtle difference between these. If I want to run system restore, can I change its name to .com to get it to run, or will I have to find a less direct method? Judy
  6. <p>Daniel,</p> <p> </p> <p>I can afford to be without the computer for another day, but after that I'll have to think about taking more radical action. I ran both a quick scan and a full scan. Neither found anything. I've enclosed the quick scan log - let me know if you want the other one as well.</p> <p> </p> <p>Judy</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <div>Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.60.1.1000</div> <div>www.malwarebytes.org</div> <div> </div> <div>Database version: v2012.02.24.01</div> <div> </div> <div>Windows 7 x64 NTFS</div> <div>Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.16385</div> <div>Joe :: JOE-PC [administrator]</div> <div> </div> <div>05/03/2012 13:55:46</div> <div>mbam-log-2012-03-05 (13-55-46).txt</div> <div> </div> <div>Scan type: Quick scan</div> <div>Scan options enabled: Memory | Startup | Registry | File System | Heuristics/Extra | Heuristics/Shuriken | PUP | PUM</div> <div>Scan options disabled: P2P</div> <div>Objects scanned: 184929</div> <div>Time elapsed: 3 minute(s), 47 second(s)</div> <div> </div> <div>Memory Processes Detected: 0</div> <div>(No malicious items detected)</div> <div> </div> <div>Memory Modules Detected: 0</div> <div>(No malicious items detected)</div> <div> </div> <div>Registry Keys Detected: 0</div> <div>(No malicious items detected)</div> <div> </div> <div>Registry Values Detected: 0</div> <div>(No malicious items detected)</div> <div> </div> <div>Registry Data Items Detected: 0</div> <div>(No malicious items detected)</div> <div> </div> <div>Folders Detected: 0</div> <div>(No malicious items detected)</div> <div> </div> <div>Files Detected: 0</div> <div>(No malicious items detected)</div> <div> </div> <div>(end)</div> <div> </div>

  8. No worry - I made some cakes. Unfortunately the symptoms are still the same If its just a problem caused by the download going wrong, can't I just do a system restore to before?
  9. OK, I've downloaded the revuninstaller and tried to run it. When it got to step 2 and tried to uninstall it it hit the file download pop-up. Then when it looked for left over items its come up with multiple entries in the registry and is asking whether I want to delete them. Do I skip this step, or delete all of them? Judy
  10. Daniel, filepath to malwarebytes was "C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe"
  11. As an update to the last post - my screensaver is now working again. Previously it came up with a black screen and a message about incompatibility with something. I now have bubbles again Unfortunately everything else is the same
  12. No change when I removed it - however the date of installation was the 29th Feb, which was when all this started, and it wasn't something I intentionally downloaded. The program I diw download was winzip, so I removed that as well, but it won't let me remove the winzipbar Toolbar, which has the same date. I don't know whether there is any significance to that. Judy
  13. Its my Husbands computer, and so I'm not that familiar with the icons on the desktop. However, the kasparsky does not look familiar, and my husband doesn't think it is either. I certainly haven't put Kaspersky on this machine, and I would be surprised if he had. Is it possible this is something pretending to be Kaspersky that isn't? Judy
  14. OK, but how do I get a screenshot - I normally use paint to capture image, but it won't let me run it
