Malwarebytes (w/out protection module)

Recommended Posts

It's been suggested that the authors of Malwarebytes have commented privately to a particular newsgroup/forum contributer that MBAM (free version - w/out protection module) is not intended for keeping installed to the operating system

If this is factual, then why is it possible downloading/installing the version of MBAM without protection mode and why isn't their any comment with respect to this in either the Malwarebytes website or 'About' tab?

Any comments please.

This is most likely not true. We all feel that Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an invaluable tool for the average user to keep installed on their computers, and we believe that they should be able to keep the freeware scanner/remover as long as they want.

While the license agreement for the freeware version does specify that corporate/business users are not allowed to use MBAM without purchasing a license for each computer they want it on, we do allow home users to use the freeware version on all of their computers without restricting it's use as a freeware malware removal tool, and without limiting it's functionality as far as scanning for and removing malware.

I would be interested to know where you heard this rumor.

Sounds like a bunch of BS to me.

Perhaps someone looking to stir up controversy?

Proof is in the pudding, tell us where you heard this absurd rumour

MBAM and SAS are free. The authors of the former would prefer that you express your thanks & support their efforts by purchasing/activating the full version which which enables "realtime protection, scheduled scanning,

and scheduled updating."

I have posted in that same thread - and confirm that what has been posted here is a true reflection of events.

The only thing similar I've heard around here is when a user who MBAM helped to clean their PC asked about making donations. They were told that Malwarebytes' doesn't accept donations (SAS does) but that if they wanted to help support Malwarebytes', they should purchase a pro license (which, incidentally would add protection to the user's system).

I'd like to call out PABear and find out just who he heard that from.

What's the point of recommending users uninstall after malware removal? The whole point to making the free version good is to hope people take the step up and buy Pro.

And I won't even get into the fact that the convo is for 'antivirus' not antispyware so neither of those two ought to be mentioned.

EDIT--I just noticed that's private newsgroup, so until I do some digging no way for me to verify the integrity of the entire conversation.

All software that offers a free version and a Pro version has an end goal of getting you to purchase the Pro license. That's the point of being in business.

You can believe me when I say that no one here wants users to uninstall the freeware version after using it. By all means, keep it, continue to use it, and we hope it helps you even more in the future. We don't expect everyone to buy the Pro license, but we don't want people to uninstall the freeware version just because they don't want to pay for a Pro license.

Obviously that doesn't apply to corporate use, where we require the purchase of the Pro license to use the software.

I'm very interested to hear you say that it's a private newsgroup! :D

It is available through the Microsoft Communities web interface ( http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsg...ng=en&cr=US ) and is also on Usenet. I access by using Outlook Express as my newsreader and access via 'msnews.microsoft.com' (also available at 'news.microsoft.com') I can also access via news.aoie.org and news.motzarella.org

The group is also available on Google Groups http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.p...omeusers/topics

Contacting PA Bear is easy (or should be) He is the prime mover at http://aumha.net/ I have checked today and his total posts there have reached 18457 (the highest of all posters). His name is Robear Dyer. Simply register and then make a post in 'Discussions'.

Please let me know if you cannot access any of these routes. Thanks.

As Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware was installed, use Add or Remove Programs and uninstall it. If you find any other files or folders created during this cleanup operation, please feel free to delete them

Bill Castner

well they may just be trying to not show any favoritism, and I can understand that, however that fact that they reccomended that MBAM be installed and used for scans kind of says it all

They questioned my legitimacy because I used the web interface to post my rebuttal? Do they have no life?

My personal view?

Trust *nothing* that is said by either Peter Foldes or Robear Dyer (aka PA Bear)

In every barrel there can be bad apples - and Bill Castner himself (of

Aumha) gives me a 'hinky' feeling! I've used every life-skill I have to

extract information from those I 'think' (hink!!!) are possibly 'bad

guys' - and they DO make mistakes! After having had my PC cleaned at

AumHa (by Robear Dyer) I was still uneasy - so reinstalled Windows again

from scratch! There is no way for an ordinary user to judge whether or

not their PC is actually clean. They might go to AumHa or any of the

similar 'help' sites on the 'net, be assured that they no longer have a

problem ........ but leave the site with a 'nastie' on board which they

might never become aware of - *put* there by those purporting to help.

That's BAD!

I'm not saying that there IS a connection between Annexcafe and AumHa - but I have a sneaky suspicion that there could be! (Oops! That's another story!)

For the record, James A. Eshelman and Bill Castner go back to somewhere between God and Moses or at least windows 98.

:D

On this page http://aumha.net/memberlist.php?sk=d&s...&start=3200

Member 3249 GC Jones has a web site

3248 folk have registered with Aumha beforehand - yet *none* have made a

single post.

Is there someting special about GC Jones?

Mr. Eshelman is presently Chancellor of the College of Thelema. He serves as

Prolocutor-General of the Temple of Thelema, which he co-founded in 1987 with

Anna Kria King and Phyllis Seckler. He is a former Grand Chief of Fraternitas

L.V.X. Occulta (Fraternity of Hidden Light).

He is the author of the acclaimed book "The Mystical & Magical System of the

It says so here: http://www.aiwass.org/lecture/

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Mine is that aumha staff, especially Bill Castner and Robear Dyer, are an invaluable resource and do yeoman's service in volunteering their time to assist others, (including myself - many times). I have found them to be 100% trustworthy over several years as a member there. Not infallible, but then who is? I cannot understand why their motives would be questioned over a difference of opinion, or a misunderstanding of MBAM's authors' intentions.

They frequently instruct posters to download MBAM to help in clearing malware, and obviously hold it in high regard. And you can't fault Robear for recommending MBAM's real-time protection of the paid version;

Let's leave the ad hominem comments out of this thread.

My 2 cents ...

Thanks for the confirmation Raid. That's what I figured. I've been haunting this place for a while now and there's a reason I've tried to help out so much: I respect what you guys do and how you do it. You bend over backwards (and sometimes sideways) to help people out, regardless of whether or not you're being paid and you run one of the most open forums I've ever seen. You tell us users what's going on with the software, what issues the software has and clean up PC's free of charge (at only the cost of the occasional sample of undetected malware to add to the database). My goal is to see the day come that users seldom, if ever, need an "expert" to help them clean their PC with tools like HijackThis and they're able to simply download a great tool like MBAM, do a quick scan, remove the nasties and come out clean as a whistle hassle free. That's why I'm here and that's why I help, because that seems to be your goal as well. So on behalf of myself and God knows how many others, THANK YOU AND KEEP IT UP, IT'S NEEDED! :D

It's supposed to look more professional this way. I don't need my name in lights to know what I do counts. All I have to do is read the forums. Happy users make what I do worth all the effort. Same can easily be said for the rest of the team.

What a far cry from 10 years ago, eh? I'm really pleased that you now think this way! B)

Helping others is the way to go .......... and very satisfying it is too. Keep up the good work!

Have a great day, Dustin.
