  1. I have an x86 pc with WinXP Home Edition and IE 8. This is a retail store bought pc that was preloaded and I have no original WinXP Home disks nor do I have any OEM disks that came with the machine. I have a new problem that just cropped up out of the blue that Microsoft Support can't seem to do anything about (or won't without $$$). I have a problem with IE8 on WinXP in that all my settings suddenly seem all screwed up. Everything was running reasonably OK one night and not the next. I have run all my antimalware (MBAM, MBAR, HitManPro) and antivirus and antiadware (MSE and SAS, etc) and nothing shows up. IE8 wants to run predominately in compatibility mode. I have changed settings and then reset IE8 to the default settings but this had no effect whatsoever. I have not tried to reinstall IE8 as yet. I can not edit posts in Microsoft Community forums because the screen freezes whenever I hit the edit button even though I can edit my profile just fine. My Yahoo mail is all screwed up. etc, etc. All this happened suddenly just two days ago. Previously everything was running just fine. I am also having problems reinstalling Family Tree Maker 2005 after an uninstall because of an "access denied" error. So I don't know whether I have an undetected virus or trojan problem or whether my system files are just all screwed up. I also don't know whether a repair install of XP is even possible on this setup or how to do that. Any bright ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Vernon
  2. Hi, exile360, [My bad, I actually had completely overlooked the QtGui4.dll file that was sitting right there within the mbar folder.] I contacted the Support Team and William Rowland, Consumer Support Specialist, contacted me via email. He said to extract everything from the .zip file first (which I had done). Then open the mbar folder that is within the mbar-1.06.0.1004 folder. The mbar.exe application is the one with the blue "jack-hammer" icon (just like before). Click on this to then run the program. Once extracted, the mbar folder, itself, can actually be dragged out of the extraction location and placed onto the desktop or wherever, and then the application (blue icon) can be run from there (from inside the folder). Or you can simply make a shortcut to the executable by right clicking on the blue icon and then move the shortcut anywhere you want, perhaps onto the desktop (this is what I did). This does differ slightly from my previous installation version (mbar-1.06.0.1003) wherein I had made a copy of the executable (blue icon) and moved the copy to the desktop and had run it from there just fine. Apparently you can not do this with the newer version, the executable must be run from inside the same folder as the QtGui4.dll file. This is why I was confused with the newest (.1004) version, because I did what I had done with the previous version but kept getting the error message. I have responded back to the Support Team via email with this same info. All is good. Thanks for your help Vernon
  3. exile360, just to let you know, the re-download did not work. I still get the error message. Vernon
  4. Thanks, exile360, Basically that's what I already did before and still got the error indicated. However, I'll try it again. I only have MS Firewall, MSE, MBAM (free), and SAS (free) on my machine, nothing other. Vernon
  5. Could you tell me how to reinstall the apparently missing QtGui4.dll? I tried to run the Anti-Rootkit and got an error message saying it could not be found. I ran the update to get the latest version but still got the same error message again. I have run the program previously with no problems. I've got a x86 PC with WinXP Home SP3 and IE8. Thanks Vernon
  6. I'm an old-timer and Fred is a youngster (insert smile). Fred is extremely knowledgeable, polite, and most of all, patient.

  7. Hi, I guess we should just close it up. I don't know if any of this has been useful for anyone else, but that's OK too. Vernon Thanks again
  8. OK, great! I really appreciate all your time and effort working on this. It has been an interesting, if downright frustrating, experience. You have a lot of patience. Thanks Vernon
  9. Yes, I agree with you. I'll just keep using it "as is" until I can swing a new(er) system. You did suggest Windows 8, right? What about minimum CPU speed and Ram? And which version of Explorer (or other) would you recommend looking at? I doubt that I will get anything smaller than a full sized Notebook if only because I have big fingers and have trouble using my daughter's Laptop keyboard. Do you have any brand preferences? Thanks Vernon
  10. Hi, My bad, it's framedyn.dll, as it's always been. And it was still there when we ran the OTL file. It showed up, I clicked OK, and then the OTL ran OK. Later we reran the fixdamage.exe file and again the error message popped up and again I clicked Ok and the error message went away. Then the fixdamage.exe ran, but I do not know whether it actually did anything (or fix the framedyn.dll file for that matter). I have not tried it since, so I'm not sure if it is still around or not. Two things: (1) concerning the "missing" Administrator account, I went into safe mode and it offers the Administrator user there, so it's not "missing", just not being displayed. When I went to Control Panel>User Accounts and try to add a new Administrator account it tells me that it already exists. I just can't see it, so I must have disabled it not deleted it. Oh,well. (2) I had tried out the Ad-Aware Antivirus 10+ in the so called "Compatibility Mode" alongside MSE, but found that it was not compatible at all and removed it with Revo Uninstaller. Or so I thought. I since had gone into C:\Program Files and discovered a folder for Ad-Aware. Obviously this was not removed. Now I don't know whether all the registry entries were removed either. Do you have a link to a Ad-Aware cleanup program? I tried unsuccessfully going to their site but could not find anything approprate there. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places. Thanks
  11. Hi, I'm back, I am slightly lost as to where we currently stand. What is the fixdamage.exe program supposed to do, anyway? Perhaps fix the command line entry stuff? Have we fixed the Framedyn.exe problem or do you have some more ideas to try? Did the downloaded logs suggest things to you that we need to do, or that we have not tried yet relative to cleaning things up? Have we overlooked anything? This "we haven't done this yet because we haven't gotten that to work yet" is driving me nuts. Thanks I really appreciate your help
  12. OK, I'll give it a shot and let you know. I am going to pull the plug also. I'll be back to you sometime tommorrow. Thanks Well, OK, I lied, I was just too curious to let it go. The error message is still with me. Same as before. But whenever I click on the OK button it goes away, and then the Fixdamage program continues and then says All done! So I'm not sure exactly what has actually happened. I don't know if it really fixed anything at all. So, enough for now. I'm outa here! Tomorrow >
  13. Hi. Well perhaps not. I am an administrator, I just did not know if the actual Administrator account had additional capabilities or privileges that my account does not. To be honest I have never actually "created" any user accounts including an Administrator one or it has been so long ago I have forgotten how. Have we fixed the framedyn.exe problem yet? It was still popping up whenever I was starting to run the OTL program but then went away whenever I clicked OK. Then the regular OTL screen came up anyway.
  14. Hi,Fred, Yeah, I know how to do that. However, I do not remember when this may have occurred. It may have taken place weeks ago. And with all these fixes and changes going on, will restoring then undo all the work we have done so far? Vernon
  15. Hi. Well I thought that I was disabling several computer User Accounts which had once also included a computer Administrator account that I never used. And then lately 4 or 5 Firefox/Mozzilla User Accounts appeared. I must have temporarily loaded Firefox and then uninstalled it for some reason. I have done a number of things late at night so I could have done anything including actually deleting them. When I go to "User Accounts" to change to adifferent one all I get is my "DALE" account and a Guest account to chose from. No computer Administrator account like before.
