Can't restore Windows 8 from image

Recommended Posts

The difference is Retail vs. OEM license.

A retail license is sold separately and can be tied to ONLY one PC.

A OEM license is granted to the manufacturer thus their is a license attached to the PC but as a OEM, when one uses an OEM OS installer, one doesn't have to enter the license keycode.

This is Dell so I will expand on this...

If one goes to Support.Dell.Com they can either use the "Service Tag" or drill down to the exact PC model (Ex:  Laptop --> Inspiron --> Inspiron 15 3521 )

Then go to "Drivers and Downloads" and view the "Operating Systems" available.  Using the exampled Inspiron 3521, one sees...

Windows 7/64

Windows 8/64

Windows 8.1/64

Therefore if one has a Dell OEM Windows OS Installation disk for those OS' then there is no problems in installing the OS and no need to enter a OS keycode.  If one uses a retail disk, the user would have to enter a keycode.  If one used a Dell OEM Windows OS Installation disk for Windows Vista or Windows XP then the OS would not validate the installation and it would request a keycode and validation or declare the installation as unlicensed.

This topic can be closed since nobody seems willing to help with this misunderstanding. Rather disappointed.... One reason I like GNU/Linux is that I don't get a bunch of backlash from people saying that's not legal. Licensing is confusing so give people a break....

No one is giving you a hard time.  All that was said is that the licensing as used is not supported.

If you or whomever is using the computer is comfortable using Linux it is a good choice for some.  As long as you're just doing the basic things and not changing hardware around then once you get Linux installed and running it will work just fine for those with limited needs (meaning that it will run well without needing to get into deep configuration issues).

There is nothing anyone of us can do about licensing for you with Microsoft.

Even if that dell Win7 disk installed and showed activated on that win8 computer it is STILL NOT a LEGAL installation UNLESS that Win8 CAME with 8PRO  (most Don't) and you took DOWNGRADE rights.

Simple, And I am not trying to give you a hard time.

If computer comes from factory ie, Dell with WIN 8 PRO you are allowed to down grade to win 7 PRO otherwise full Win 7 not upg or oem must be purchased. You must have your own or a factory supplied Win 7 pro disk AND a key for it even if it is already used. When it fails activation you call MS and prove to them you have the proper win 8  for downgrade.

Really nothing more or less. Of course the drivers need to be available before you consider this.

yep DSK ... not giving you a ration/hard time ... the rules are the rules (even though they are convoluted and about as clear as mud at times) .

"availability of drivers" ... uuuggghhh .

/me pounds forehead on keyboard

the other day i "saved" an 8.1 install that a friend took upon himself to perform .

he could not get/find the video drivers for his "on board" graphics .

i checked too ... the MB manufacturer and originator of the graphics chip did not write anything for W8/8.1 .

i pulled an nvidia graphics card out of the bone-pile that checked out and worked ok with W8.1 .

Well maybe it was a misunderstanding. This is the post that kinda set me off. Sometimes it's hard to tell the tone when reading.

One of the problems I have is that a lot of my questions go unanswered or I get like 2 responses and that's it. Even when it comes to issues with MBAM usually it doesn't get resolved or much effort put into helping doesn't seem to exist. For this topic I asked what downgrade rights was and got no response. Was willing to work with this if at all possible, but guess with licensing there isn't much options. The lack of helpful responses and getting things resolved on this forum is frusterating which is why I don't post much anymore as it seems to be a waste of time.

The bold part was just to highlight the important parts , Sorry. What I was basically trying to say is for example, Your dell 7 disk will work and will install activated but unless the pc has 8 pro from the factory .. MS states its not Valid. I couldn't do that for you in my shop without being guilty of piracy . What you do on your own computer at your house is up to you.

At least you dont get(that question has been answerd many times use the search function.)

Also the last few topics you started seemed to go to completion?

Ahh okay that was my bad then. Not your fault. I guess with all the trolls lately in WoW it kinda got to me. lol I understand now.

Yup. :P

Haven't wrote many for a bit so maybe I seemed to have forgotten about them. One of the last ones was with MBAM wanting to do a flashs can on every update even when not checked for some reason and Ron I think told me to set it to silent which wasn't exactly how I wanted it, but it worked I just liked to see feedback with the tooltip on update.

Maybe I'm just not as good with all this tech stuff as I want to believe.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I tend to kinda go off without really thinking about the whole situtation. Really need to work on that.... :)

when it comes to leagalese that is *supposedly* dumbed down to be made palatable for the consumption of john q. consumer ... there is much left to be desired .

i hear tell that lawyers have other lawyers go over something to make sure that their interpretation is correct .

ps ... it is rare that i use capitalization in text (some acronyms and such) as it is/has become synonymous with "shouting" (which was not really the case originally ... pun intended) .

i tend to use italicization of words and "quote marks" to elevate/indicate intensity , importance , flippancy , verve , élan , (etc) .

Uefi Stands for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface it's a new kind of bootloader. It has nothing to do with the laptops image recovery. Most of the time you just need to know how to access your recovery options. assuming the image is on removable media readable by the o.s and was correctly made

1. boot the computer into normal mode and log in to windows like usual

2. after you log in and you get to the screen with all the tiles (start screen) press and HOLD the "Windows Button" on your keyboard and Then press "C" and let go.

3. this will bring up your charms bar on the right side and click "Settings" then click "change PC Settings"

4. under pc settings, click "General"

5. then under advanced startup click "Restart now" (If you get a screen that says continue Troubleshoot or Turn off your pc after a restart, choose Troubleshoot"

6. then click "repair your computer"

7. then click "system image recovery" and plug in your installation media containing your image and it will reinstall using the image

I tried to remember this from memory i've had linux for a while so I kind of forget recovery steps but I'm 99% sure I am right.

Good Luck!! :)

Thanks guys! :)

Already knew UEFI was not OS or image related, but haven't figured out how to use the shell yet. :P I'll probably experiment with this later when I get a chance. :)

Also one other question. This probably won't matter for licensing, but what if I installed Ubuntu on this computer then reinstall the mentioned Dell version of Windows 7 and replace the other computer with Ubuntu so only one would have this copy of Windows 7 installed. Would that make any difference since technically Windows 8 was not installed prior? Or would it not matter since it came with Windows 8 and therefore still under licensing between Microsoft and Dell?

Tell you what.  You install how you want, get it running and don't worry about telling us what or how you have it installed.  If it passes the Microsoft Genuine Validation check and you're only running it on your computer and not a bunch of them then that's up to you and Microsoft.  I seriously do not think Microsoft is going to give much of a darn about 1 computer when they have 1.5 billion of them out there running Windows.  If they invalidate your license then that's up to them not us.

WOW.

All I was trying to do was make it a genuine install, but guess thats not gonna happen. Nobody has really even bothered to explain what downgrade rights was so I'm still somewhat confused. You can close this topic now I probably won't be responding much on here anymore if that's the attitude a forum manager has and refuses to answer some of my questions.

Wow - I'm trying to help you, but if you think I'm not then that is up to you.

Your questions have been answered to the best of our ability.  No one here is a lawyer or works for Microsoft.  If you want a 100% accurate answer then you will have to call Microsoft and get it because any replies from anyone else are based on reading the documentation provided by Microsoft and how they interpret what the legalize means.
