Had my friend download MBAM

Recommended Posts

I'm on IM with her and this is what she told me:

"I went to the site, I downloaded it like it said. Then when I clicked finish so that it would open up the program my laptop immediately shut down on me and when it restarted I went and clicked on the program and it came up with an error screen and wouldn't work so I uninstalled it"

Any ideas what happened/what I should tell her?

Unfortunately she doesn't have any AV on her computer... I keep telling her to get something. I hope malware/a virus isn't the reason.

Oh, and if it matters, as far as I know she is running Vista.

Do you remember what the error was? And if she has no AV she could be infected? Remember I'm not on mbam support. So she will have to see this reply. Can she login into the forum. It would be a little hard for you to tell here what to do below. Unless someone posts another idea under mine. She might want to go this way:

Scan and post logs - read note at bottom in green

If you're having Malware related issues with your computer that you're unable to resolve.

  1. Please read and follow the instructions provided here: I'm infected - What do I do now?
  2. If needed please post your logs in a NEW topic here: Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs
  3. When posting logs please do not use any Quote, Code, or other tags. Please copy/paste directly into your post and do not attach files unless requested.
  • Please do not post any logs in the General forum. We do not work on any logs posted in the General forum.
  • Please do not install any software or use any removal/scanning tool except for those you're requested to run by the Helper that will assist you.
  • Using these other tools often makes the cleanup task more difficult and time consuming.
  • If you have already submitted for assistance at one of the other support sites on the Internet then you should not post a new log here, you should stay working with the Helper from that site until the issue is resolved.
  • Do not assume you're clean because you don't see something in the logs. Please wait until the person assisting you provides feedback.
  • There are often many others that require asistance as well, so please be patient. If no one has responded within 48 hours then please go ahead and post a request for review
  • NOTE: If for some reason you're unable to run some or any of the tools in the first link, then skip that step and move on to the next one. If you can't even run HijackThis, then just proceed and post a NEW topic as shown in the second link describing your issues and someone will assist you as soon as they can.

@ yardbird,

Just sent it, asking her to wait.

she already went.

I had to consult with miekiemoes, via pm to ask her if this is the right course of action.

If we/you get a reply shortly? then I believe she is good to follow the instructions.

@ yardbird.

She said it was clean.

Do you have a direct link for Avira? If not, I'll hunt around on here for it.

EDIT: Found a link that Exile gave me a while back. :)

@ yardbird:

:)

She downloaded Avira. Clean!

Phew! I was worried she might have something because she hasn't had anything but the built-in fire wall and of course the windows updates on it for a while now...

Thanks again for all your help with this :) She thanks you too!

Seems to be working fine as far as I can tell. I haven't poked around in it yet to see if there are any additional things/settings I need to do with it because I am updating my Adobe Reader & Flash right now. Then I'll poke around on MBAM.

Maybe I shouldn't be scared to search the web now :)

I have pretty much done NO surfing since I learned about online dangers. I go to this site, another forum or two I frequent, my email (yahoo, gmail, hotmail), facebook (sometimes) and that's really it. I am kind of scared of the internet now lol.

And I sure will! Thanks!

Thanks! Just saw that.

Okay, good to know! I'll show my husband too so he knows.

Yay! I've been afraid to for several months now. AVG claims to protect from clicking malicious links, but I'm not so sure :) Now with MBAM I feel safer.

Ever since my redirection incident I have been scared crapless about the internet... hah. Not sure if you read about that or not...

The first post in that thread explains it.

My husband goes on several chat forums, and goes to RC (remote control, in case you don't know) sites too. He shops online for these things too. I also use Amazon and go to a few of the forums that he goes to too.

Well you don't be afraid to look around the internet. See the Internet bad sites are going to get worse. But the MBAM Program you now have is only going to get better & stronger! you have a good day. post back with any questions or problems, were here to help. :) regards...

@yardbird

Thanks :) I don't think I'll be as afraid now. I have an AVG thing that checks the safety of links, so that helps, but now with MBAM pro, I feel much better.

Blech. Are there particular sites that are more likely to be bad than others, or is anything at risk really?

Thanks, I will :)

see this thread: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16802 Screensavers is a biggie. I'll let you run this question in the forum. but the odds are, if you don't know the website, then theres an element of risk. If you ever get infected, a support group like this one, will get you fixed up. Maybe someone else will expand on your question here.

@ yardbird

Thanks :) I actually read that a few weeks ago. Scared me even more, lol. Then I was reading another blog I found on there that was talking about how 70% of infected websites were otherwise legit websites that had been infected by the bad guys. That scared me crapless too. I mean really. Ugh.

So as for screensavers being dangerous to search for, for example, is the actual SEARCH dangerous, or is the clicking on of any results afterwards what is actually dangerous?

Hmm so you're saying if I don't already know the website and have been to it or w/e, then there could be risk? Like a few weeks ago I did a search on beavers and went to that website. I figured it was fine. I also did a search on birds and found a .org site, figured that was fine.

Why do people have to make malware and crap like that? I'm not really asking you.. just making a statement, heh. Its too bad, people should be able to go online and use their computer and not have to worry about ANYTHING because people shouldn't be making crap like this. It's really sad. Thankfully programs like Malwarebytes are there to save the day :)

Well you have mbam Pro, protection now. And you have a AV program. If something happens, you can Quaratine it now. And if you need removal help. You know where the forum is. I can get infected, (or the program will put it in Quaratine) anyone can. but thes programs will keep you safe as the next person. Go out & do some surfing, plug & play.. :) (you worry to much) enjoy the day.... regards

Thanks yardbird.

I know I do worry too much. It's a problem sometimes. I worry about way too many things when I need to just chill.

Thanks, I will, although its night now :) I have a date with my pillow that I cannot be late for! You have a great night/day as well.
