BitDefender AV is preventing MBAM from updating.

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

For some reason BitDefender is preventing MBAM from updating. I have to disable Bitdefender in order to successfully manually update MBAM. This just happened all of a sudden. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

I can ping the update server no problem.

I am going to stand down in favor of a more competent Malwarebytes authority.

Your actions and responses have been quite helpful.

Hopefully a Malwarebytes staffer will respond soon. Thank you.

  • Root Admin

What is the EXACT name and version of BitDefender you're using and is it a paid version? What Operating System?

Please download and run the following and send us back the logs when completed.

Download
DDS
and save it to your desktop

Disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click
dds.scr
to run the tool.

When done, the
DDS.txt
will open.

Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

  1. DDS.txt

  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply:
    DDS.txt
    and
    Attach.txt

I read the post from the other user experiencing the same problem. I uninstalled both MBAM and BitDefender. I reinstalled MBAM and updated it no problem. I waited a day so that I knew a new update would be available for MBAM. I then installed BitDefender. Again, MBAM would not update claiming that it had the latest database. I uninstalled BitDefender (takes about 3 minutes) and rebooted. I was then able to update MBAM again. So in short, the fix the other user was able to implement did not work in my case. :(

I have Bitdefender AV Pro 2011 (Antivirus only) on Win 7 64 and the only issue with MBAM was the request during initial installation to uninstall. This is not uncommon with AV and particularly Internet Security suites (disabling Windows Defender was also requested). It did give me an option (which I took) to skip this stage. After installation there is no apparent conflict and no issue with MBAM updating. This suggests that the conflict lies with the firewall element. When you register with Bitdefender you need to establish an account which you can use to access support, maybe you can get them to resolve the matter.

I made sure to skip the part where BitDefender wants to uninstall other security suites. I actually disabled each of the BitDefender modules one at a time to see which one is the culprit. If I disable the firewall module it still will not update. When I disable the antivirus module it works no problem--even if the firewall module is enabled at this moment. I have also made queries to BitDefender, haven't had a response from them since my initial request for help. I will try to make a new request with them.

Interesting... not enough conclusive information to say for sure but let's do some maintenance to see if it helps.

From the Event Logs

Please do a FULL DISK check of all of your drives using the following information.

Setting Rules for Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in BitDefender 2011 Products(Internet Security and Total Security):

Open BitDefender

Click Options and select Expert View

In Expert View,

Click on Firewall on the left, then click on Programs

Click on Add Rule and make 2 rules: one for mbam.exe and one for mbamservice.exe

This fix is easier and works!
