  1. @Firefox - I agree completely: "Cyber Insider Threat is very real and much more common for SysAdmins to deal with" - but it still should not be lumped in with "Social Engineering".
  2. Cyber Insider Threat is very real and much more common for SysAdmins to deal with, but it is not remotely related to "Social Engineering". Social Engineering is the malicious manipulation of someone who has access - typically by someone from outside the organization. It could also be one member of an organization finessing the credentials of another member.
  3. @ Steve, Thank you very much - understood. All - For the record, I only install licensed MBAM versions and sincerely hate pirates who do otherwise. In a prior post from long ago I got Marcel's stamp of approval for my methodology, so I think I'm good to go. I think I'm done with the topic at this point if someone cares to close this out. 4. David H. Lipman I was actually hoping to hear from someone on the technical/development side of the house. The legacy api's in NT should still be supported and depending on what was used to compile the program, it could still be functional - especially since it is still showing as usable with WIN2K (another dead, buried, and forgotten OS). Your comments about the employee are noted but - as he is the grandson of the founder - I doubt further action will be taken. My personal preference was to drag him outside by the stacking swivel and pound some sense into his head. I don't understand the "commercial license" comment. I always install a licensed copy of Malwarebytes (Pro) on any system I am repairing, but don't understand why a "commercial license" is required for an individual system.
  5. I get the part about this being a very old OS - and my life would be a lot simpler if it was "Dead, buried and forgotten OS.", but that is not true in this case. This customer had an application built sometime in the last century that still does exactly what is needed for him and would cost a lot of money to have it re-written. It hadn't been connected to the Internet for about 10 years until one of his new employees ran a cable over to it to do some surfing 'on the sly'. We all know what happens when you do that. I tried to be concise in my description of the situation: <<I am trying to help someone who is running legacy applications on a Windows NT computer.>> <<There is no option to upgrade the OS to anything newer.>>It would be very helpful if commenters would read the information provided before posting. At this point, there is no need to continue this thread and I will close it out (as soon as I figure how). Semper Fi to all who know what that means.
  6. If there is anyone helping on this forum who would care to explain why MBAM works with Windows 2K, but not NT, I would be interested to know why.
  7. Thank you so much for your cordial reply. Have a nice day.
  8. I am trying to help someone who is running legacy applications on a Windows NT computer. There is no option to upgrade the OS to anything newer. Logically it makes sense to me that it will be OK, but hoping to get confirmation from one of the staff. Thank you.
  9. Possibly You ever heard of "PICNIC"? (Problem In Chair, Not In Computer) I'll post back when I get the real story. Thanks.
  10. Thanks for the response - but I'm thinking this one is a user error. Earlier today he said he was running BOTH Panda Cloud and Microsoft Security Essentials. I asked him to confirm that, but haven't heard back. I will definitely keep you posted. Thanks.
  11. I am double-checking to make sure he did the Firewall settings. I know he did the processes, but not sure on the FW. Thanks.
  12. "I did walk him through configuring Panda and MBAM to ignore each other, but that didn't help." That was the first thing I thought of - but it didn't help.
  13. A customer is having a problem with very slow boot-up times (2+ minutes) after installing MBAM Pro on his systems (2xXP Pro, 1xWindows 7). He just replaced the free version and the problem started immediately thereafter. I told him that the 'on-access' function means that new services/processes are now starting, but that wouldn't explain this kind of delay. I run the Pro version on all my computers (XP & 7) and have noticed a few extra seconds, but never anything like this. Any advice I can pass on to the customer? I did walk him through configuring Panda and MBAM to ignore each other, but that didn't help. Thanks.
  14. From my perspective, the combination of MBAM (PRO) and MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) has been an out of the park homerun. I've been loading that combination on my customer's computers since about January 2010 and not one system has been re-infected. These are all home users - mostly retired folks - with very low levels of IT knowledge and they need something simple and automatic. I also put in a small Linksys/Netgear router, modify the HOSTS file (MVPS.org), and change the default cookie settings in IE. I saw an article on another forum that was highly complimentary of MBAM - and something you might want to check out: http://www.experts-exchange.com/A_1958.html Thanks again.
