Can't Enable Self-Protection Module

Recommended Posts

I'm having the same problem that others are -- I cannot enable the self-protection module.  I've already run the Clean Removal tool and the diagnostics.  Attached are the results.

One question while I'm here...  The Clean Removal instructions tell you to disable and enable your virus protection at various points,  But it's hard to enable protection when you've just removed it.  Are you suggesting that we need to use another virus protection product in addition to MBAM?  The whole reason that I switched to the paid, premium version was so that I could get rid of Microsoft Security Essentials, which has just started hanging my computer in the last couple of days.  Is MBAM not virus protection?  Why should I need another product?

Thanks!

While your logs get analyzed I will go ahead and answer your question...

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not meant to be a replacement for antivirus software. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a complementary but essential program which detects and removes zero-day malware and "Malware in the Wild". This includes malicious programs and files, such as virus droppers, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and rogue applications that many antivirus programs do not detect or cannot fully remove. That being said, there are many infections that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware does not detect or remove which any antivirus software will, such as file infectors. It is important to note that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware works well and should run alongside antivirus software without conflicts. In some rare instances, exclusions may need to be set for your specific antivirus product to achieve the best possible system performance.

So you will have to install some antivirus software... List of well known antivirus products

The computer is having some issues with updates and is still running the Microsoft Security Client but it is no longer supported on XP and will not be updated by Microsoft anymore so you should uninstall it.  I would also recommend uninstalling ALL versions of Java.

I would suggest following the advice from the topic here Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and having one of the Experts assist you with looking into your issue.

Thank you

I'm sorry, but I described the problem incorrectly.  It's the Malicious Website Protection that I can't get enabled.  Does that change your analysis?

Regarding MS Security Essentials, they say they will continue to provide virus definition updates until July, 2015.  So it shouldn't strictly be necessary to switch to other virus software before then.  Of course, that also raises the question of whether other virus software products will support XP, and if they do, how long they will continue to do so in the future.

No it does not change my mind. I still think you should have one of the Experts take a closer look at your system for you. There is no cost except some of your time.

As for supporting MSE well I've already removed it from about 6 computers at another job site as it was alerting and causing issues to the point it even crashed on one which it had never done before the Microsoft alert update.  Most of the larger antivirus companies still support XP as well.  Avira and Avast are 2 of the most known, common ones that also provide a free antivirus product.
