Running Mbam With Mse, Do New Exclusions Need To Be Set?

Recommended Posts

I've been running MBAM with Microsoft Security Essentials for a couple year swith zero problems. I noticed with the 2.0 update I had to set a new firewall policy to let it communicate with the MBAM servers. This made me wonder if the other filenames have changed making it neccessary to add the exclusions back in MSE.

Hello and Welcome....

Most users don't need to enter exceptions, but if you feel the need to do so here are the files that need to be excluded....

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software (not sure what version of you are using):

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

For Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe
For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware \mbamscheduler.exe
Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com
The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

While as you say setting exclusions for MSE is probably not necessary I planned to do the same as the OP after updating to 2.0 but I can't find "mbamdor.exe".

I have 64Bit Win 7 but there is no listing for "Malwarebytes" under C:\Program Files.  Only C:\Program Files(x86) as pictured.

I installed 2.0 over 1.75.  You imply there should be a Malwarebytes folder in C:\Program Files but there is not.  Did something go wrong?

See screenshot.

Thanks for catching that, it was a typo on my part, the correct location should be:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe

I can't find it there either.  See my screenshot.  It clearly shows four of them but not mbamdor.exe.  I can send you a screenshot of the entire contents of the Malwarebytes (x86) folder as I don't see it anywhere.

Well I can't remember where I read about adding these exclusions to MSE. I looked up the version I'm running and this is what I get.

Antimalware Client Version: 4.5.216.0
Engine Version: 1.1.10502.0
Antivirus definition: 1.173.424.0
Antispyware definition: 1.173.424.0
Network Inspection System Engine Version: 2.1.10302.0
Network Inspection System Definition Version: 110.39.0.0

Whew!

And I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit built in firewall.

I though
