MSE Offered w/Windows Update.

Yesterday I was only partially surprised, when during a Windows Update check, my system was offered MS Security Essentials (MSE).

Of course I did not respond and I've chosen to hide this download offer.

Since my system has received this, I wonder if all Windows Update queries will be met with this.

What's concerning is the systems of others might be offered this and unknowing users may be doubling up on on-access antivirus scanners and the difficulties that competing scanners may bring to their systems.

In my own case, I already use Avira's Free Antivirus (now v14.0.3.338) since the original installation of this W7 Pro x64 SP1 desktop.

Is it actually being offered? Your screen shot looks like you are in your Restore Hidden Updates Section?

Yes - I saw it as an optional download yesterday for the very first time.

And yes - you're absolutely correct. When I first noticed it yesterday, I hid it immediately after I saw it. The more I thought about it, the more concerned I became. I've read so many Malware Removal Help threads here, where a user has nothing or they have more than one on-access AV running.

One on-access AV is good - more on-access AVs must be better, huh? No!

So, I unhid it for the purpose of this thread - I've re-hidden it.

HTH :)

heh ... looks like SOP for microflop ... i get tired of hiding that update .

another hot item (well , one that really torques me) is the continual "asking" or "presenting" of that damnable *bing bar* .

Likewise for Bing Bar and Bing Desktop. I didn't unhide them for the above JPEG.

Even Microsoft has admitted MSE has failed its mission.  Stick to traditional AV vendor solftwarr.

As for the MS MRT, it has a very limited target list.  It is ONLY a monthly distributed and updated On Demand scanner for those designated in its target list.  in that role it actually surpasses MSE.

Yep, MRT isn't a bad tool for what it is/is intended to be. Back when I was a PC tech, we'd always run it on customers' systems as one of the cursory malware removal sequences before digging into the heavy stuff. We used to call it "Mr. T" :P.
