People have been reporting that they have to pay to remove malware

Recommended Posts

I am an avid member of overclock.net and this is the second time I have heard someone say this. I checked this forums news section, and announcements section, but I didn't find anything regarding it...

I'm continuously getting some setisoft pop-up on my work lappy. I don't think I've installed anything that would have been bugged, but who knows.

And no, no porn.

But it's not being allowed to do what it wants to do either, because I'm also getting an IE failed window that to get my comp going again I just have to quickly hit ctrl+alt+delete, then hit esc to back outta that and close the error box and I'm running like normal. In all that only takes seconds, but it's annoying and I don't want to deal with it. But as soon as I close the error box the setisoft deal pops up so I know they're related.

I'm not sure I can boot in safemode, as I tried earlier and then I couldn't log into my laptop. I don't have bad restrictions, I can download and install anything I want, but I do have to be logged in to do that

This setisoft deal must be doing some stuff at start up as well because it's now taking a long time to get going initially.

Any help is appriciated!

Have you run Spybot S&D or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?

You might also want to check the registry for any files names: setisoft

Also, download Revo Hunter and uninstall anything that looks suspicious.

Wouldn't you know it, the page is russian. I would definitely go and try running Spybot S&D, HiJack This, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, if you think something is happening during startup, then check msconfig.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will get those. I ran Malwarebytes earlier, but it's not free, so after it's scan it of course came up with things that it said I needed to pay to get rid of. Which I'd expect it to say whether there was a problem or not, so I was unsure.
... Malwarebytes is free. Completely free. I don't know where you guys are getting the information that it isn't.

You do have to pay for the protection module, however, you don't need that to get rid of any malware.

Try re-downloading it, or just get ClamWin, but be sure to configure the settings.

Is this true, or is there something else going on? Maybe they just are looking at something else, or are stupid.

Thanks for the program, I pretty much recommend it to anybody.

This is the case when somebody Googles 'Malwarebytes' and clicks on one of the sponsored links (rogue software). This software advertises free scans but you have to pay for removal. One such example is MalwareRemovalBot.

We have been in contact with Google and have sent DMCA notices but they just do not want to help out. They prefer their users get scammed I suppose?

I am going to get some blogging going to expose Google for who they are and hopefully they will make this right.

Let me also add here that many download sites have HUGE banner ads from other vendors which dominate the top of the page when they try to download our software.

This is misleading and can confuse the average Joe Net user because that's what they see and then when they get the software installed they get a rude surprise.

Those ads are how those sites make money and they don't care if you install the wrong software or not because it boosts their pricing by adding download stats which they in turn present to potential vendors looking to boost their sales\downloads.

Good luck, Google got called out last year by PC Magazine and all they did was clean up their site for a couple of months. Just recently one of their op-eds raked them over the coals again. Google has become the new Microsoft. All they care about is $$ not the user.
