Hi all,

First post here - first time here period.

Looks like a nice place you've all got going on here!

Anyway - on to the matter at hand - and I appologize if this question's been snswered already...

I just went to launch my Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (free version?), which I haven't used in some months, to do a scan. I was informed that the database was out of date by 80+ days, so I updated and re-started my box. Upon attempted launch of the updated version, I was again told that the database was out of date, this time by a mere 54 days.

Since I wasn't monitoring the traffic during the update, I couldn't tell you where said program was connecting to the "not-so-up-to-date" update...

I *can* tell you that this version claims to be 1.70.0.100, build date 12/14/2012...

I haven't updated again, for fear that I may have an imposter on board....I suppose I could unplug my router and try to update and note where it's trying to connect....

But I'll wait until some informed soul(s) possibly fills me in on what's going on....

Thanks in Advance!
Russ

Hi: :)

That's normal.

See this recent explanation:
http://forums.malwar...ndpost&p=644032
TMALSS, the version of the database that ships with the program installer will be outdated when you install the program.
So, after one updates a PROGRAM version, one needs to update the DATABASE.

HTH,

Hi Russ and welcome to the forums!

I think the confusion arises in the fact that there are two separate items that need to be up to date in order for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to do its job properly.
  • Database/Definitions - Think of this as a list of malware that Malwarebytes keeps track of. As new malware is created, we find it and add it to our database. This updates several times a day.
  • Program - This is the actual software, "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware". We typically release an updated version that fixes bugs and adds new features every few months or so.
The reason that you had to update twice was that when we release a new program update of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, we bundle it with the latest database that's available at the time. But because the database is updated several times per day, the version that is included within the program becomes out of date very quickly. This means that you'll need to perform a secondary database update after installing a new version of the software (unless you happen to download the new version on the day of its release, that is :P).

So to make a long story short, everything that you've reported sounds completely normal.

Hopefully this answers your question. If you have any other questions, or need more clarification on this issue, please feel free to let us know.

Edit: Darn! Looks like you beat me to it, daledoc. :D

Hi:

You are most welcome. :)

BTW, there are quite a few helpful, "how-to" articles and videos here: http://helpdesk.malwarebytes.org/forums

If you are a new user, you might find them handy.

But feel free to post back here at the forum, if you need additional help.

Cheers!
