Hi
I have noticed that in a no of PC's when I have removed XP Defender Pro and similar roques by using Malwarebytes, that on restart the file association for .exe has been changed to nothing ie it is missing. The effect of this is that you cannot run programs such as Malwarebytes and Windows Explorer.

This .exe association can be repaired in XP by using Doug Knox's fix at http://www.dougknox..../file_assoc.htm
There is a similar .exe fix available for Vista and Windows 7 at http://www.winhelpon...-for-windows-7/

One characteristic of the .exe problem is that it only seems to affect some user accounts ie doesn't affect the admin user account in safe mode. Note that the .exe patch must be run in an affected user account.

Has anyone else come across this happening?

Welcome Full Screen Ahead -
This is Our Full Response for a new fresh copy - If you have a Technicians license then you are allowed to use it (I think) -
You should have a Technicians License or a Corporate License to do the work you are doing - This will reinstall the .exe -

To Fully Remove and Reinstall a Fresh New Copy of Malwarebytes - Read Carefully

Windows XP:
  • Click on Start and select Control Panel
  • Open Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so, very important
After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here

Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version only -
Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask me and I'll explain how to do it.

Windows Vista and Windows 7:
  • Click on the Start button and select Control Panel
  • Click on Programs and Features
  • Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Restart your computer very important !
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
