  1. Ok so i re-enabled all services apart from the Acronis services above. I restarted and put some heavy duty excel to work as well as Kaspersky and the laptop has not frozen. Am I convinced that this is the cause? Not really but with a working laptop that does not freeze I am going to call a halt to this. (I note that, by viewing the Task manager, the following are also running in the background: Acronis Schedule Helper, Acronis TIB Mounter Monitor, and Acronis True Image Monitor so not all Acronis services have been stopped).I know that I have wildly digressed from the original thread title, but life is always much more complicated than 1+2=3. I'm not going to uninstall Acronis as I believe that it is an excellent program and did serve its purpose well in the transition from hard drive to SSD. To completely finish, my original fault has been cured by replacing the original SSD with a new one reinstalling all those programmes which are stored on the C drive. I am going to wipe the original SSD clean and reformat it, but that can wait as I have ample storage space on the computer. Thanks to Kev for putting up with me. Happy Christmas.
  2. Well it's two weeks later and I must admit that this month has certainly been a trying one. Unfortunately my dog passed away and I found this particularly difficult to deal with. The vet was perplexed. Certainly the effect of the Nystagmus was palpably obvious with her third eye being semi closed but there was another problem in the fact that she did not want to eat or drink, whether this was down to the fact with the paralysis she did not realise that she hadn't eaten and swallowed on that side and so when she breathed she choked on the food and water and this stopped her wanting to eat or whether there was something wrong with her stomach we were not sure so they operated on her. They didn't find anything unexpected in her stomach but she did not recover and was in the same condition after the operation. What the heck has all this got to do with my computer fault. Well having narrowed all the services down there was nothing that apparently produced the hanging. This was frustrating and very time consuming, I could only put it down to the fact that there were perhaps two, separate services acting together to cause it.To try and test the hanging during the analysis I would leave my Kaspersky doing a scan, something which would take a couple of hours giving ample time to allow the computer to hang. Over the last couple of weeks though with everything going on around me (wife still waiting for tests) I left all services disabled and have had no hanging problems. This morning though I switched on the laptop and as usual the acronis would tell me that the service had stopped, so I enabled them,Acronis scheduler 2 Service and Acronis non stop back up service. I then went to the kaspersky program which told me that it needed to be updated.Unfortunately it wouldn't update, I checked the internet connection and that was fine. I tried a couple of times resetting the laptop but it still wouldn't update and then the laptop hung. I then restarted, disabled Acronis, both services and restarted again and hey presto it updated. Has this cured everything?I don't know and will carry out some tests over the next few days, or more likely weeks so that I can definitively say that like the dog , there were two, separate, faults. Oh and by the way, It was good of you to defend the ambulance service and I would accept what you said but for the fact that whilst we were at the hospital the waiting area was empty during all the time we were there and no ambulances arrived so what were they busy doing? I'll still keep updating this thread if that's OK.
  3. Well it's been difficult to fathom this out. I thought that i was on the right track having eradicated most of the services, when up pops Windows File History, trying to save all of my hard drive and slowing things down to a crawl, which meant that I had to restart the process. I had earlier also adjusted the power settings so that when I ran a thorough scan using Kaspersky it didn't go into sleep mode, this also affected the settings of the services.I'm also trying to look after my dog who has had a very nasty case of Nystagmus which has caused half of her face to be paralysed so that when she eats and drinks, some of it goes down her windpipe. Coupled with the disgusting and I mean disgusting response of the British 999 system when I needed to get my wife into hospital last week life hasn't been great this past couple of weeks. (NW Ambulances are very busy at the moment please hold. What! Then transferred to Newcastle via Glasgow, then York, Ambulance finally arrives from Penrith 2 hours later as I am inching my wife towards the car). Ambulance staff and hospital staff excellent, by the way. Slightly off topic I know, but needed to get that out of my system and also to let people know what a dire state the emergency services are in. Oh and I was writing this up a couple of days ago when my computer froze and I lost it. I shall keep Percy Veering. See I've not lost my sense of humour.
  4. Thanks for that, yes I'm aware of that one, we used to call it the split half technique. I was thinking of doing it by company as opposed to one by one though. The system hung after I enabled the lenovo ones so I'm going to pursue that route. I've downloaded McShield and it looks great. Will use that but will have to wait till tomorrow. I'll keep you posted, thanks for maintaining an interest.
  5. Thanks for that link Kevin, I've managed to keep the laptop going since the last post so that is great, There are 38 services which are still disabled. I am enabling them by company however 38 is too many to type out so I will keep enabling, however I do like to soak test for a reaonable amount of time, I'll give Lenovo a try now to see what that brings. There are seven Lenovo services.
  6. Sorry about the quick departure from my thread, I've just had an emergency visit to the vet cos my dog had a kind of seizure this morning. OK so I copied over my Laptop Hard Drive to the new SSD using Acronis. This worked very well but I must add that in copying the hard disk over that my laptop became unplugged and died during the transfer. I retried it and it worked. I thought that i would 'run in' the SSD and I'm glad I did. Meanwhile I successfully installed Windows 10 on my desktop although a problem arose installing M$Office 365. It produced a new account meaning that I have now two One drive accounts. I'm sure I can get over this hiccup though.Back to the laptop. I noticed that it would 'hang' and despite waiting for ages it remained in that state and the only way to get out of this was to press the power button for 10 secs to do what is probably a hard reset. I have been working on this ever since by checking the BIOS which is fairly up to date, checking each and every driver which has improved things, but still the occasional 'hang'. I have now disabled all of the non Microsoft 'services' using msconfig and this has resulted in a working laptop. I am enabling the services one by one to find out the offending service. Why have i introduced all this stuff about my laptop.well this is what I want to do. Take the broken disk drive from my desktop and put it into the SSD casing, plug that into my laptop and use the original laptop disk drive to try and reformat the broken drive. I am using this convoluted way because I am worried that if there is a root infection in the broken drive it could perhaps infect/transfer into any other drive that is connected to it, so if it does I won't infect my new SSds in the laptop and Desktop. This is why I need to have my laptop running without hanging before I do it. My mother used to say that if there was an easy way to do something then I would always find a difficult way so any feedback as to my methodology would be gladly received.
  7. Hi Kevin, I can't believe that it is over a week since the last post. Personally I can't stand it when someone leaves a thread wide open, having found a solution and does not bother to let other people know what the outcome is, so I will continue to post what has happened so that others may benefit. Unfortunately life has not been kind to me and my wife over the past week and this resulted in me having to call 999 and rush her to hospital so please be patient (no pun intended) I will update as and when possible. Firstly my new hard drive arrived very quickly from the company who sold me the computer I think it arrived last Tuesday, excellent service. It was a simple process to physically install the new drive and uninstall the damaged one, however when I ran the windows 10 disk nothing happened. I rang the company and they were also perplexed. It turned out that the Windows 10 disk that they had sent with the computer was faulty so they sent me one first class. Running concurrently with this I had, before this all started, decided to upgrade my laptop to an SSD. I found a suitable SSD and sent off for it along with a casing to hold the SSD during file transfer and which included Acronis. It also arrived Tuesday. I decided, when we returned from hospital, that I would: Replace the SSD first and then use the casing and Acronis to blast the original faulty disk drive using the laptop.I have to go now will continue later...... Please do not assume that I have gone off topic with this as it hopefully will all add up together
  8. Thanks for that. I'll make sure that the new SSD works before I start messing about with this one though!
  9. No good I'm afraid. The BIOS will only allow me to override the boot up using the SSD if I choose any other option it either resets or returns to the BOOT page. On a slight side note, if the programme that I am using attempts to save to the C (SSD) drive I sometimes get a BSOD which states the stop code as MEMORY MANAGEMENT if that's any use. I've decided to order a new SSD which isn't necessarily a bad thing as I have bought one with double the capacity of this one. I hope that when it arrives I will be able to take this one out and do a straight swap and run it up using the windows 10 dvd. I've already spent 48 hrs trying with this one and have probably wasted about 6 months in my life waiting for windows to reboot!! Although the SSD is out of guarantee they have said that they will send it back to the manufacturer for a replacement so I shouldn't lose out too much. I have been able to use the faulty PC as most of my stuff is on the D drive and I only use the SSD as a system disk I use the PC mainly for using x-plane to fly 767s and made a successful flight this morning but only because it didn't have to access the C (SSD ) drive. I'd still like to keep this post open until I have successfully completed the installation sometime tomorrow if that isn't against the forum rules. If you are happy to keep persevering then I will as well, however I don't want to waste your time. Thanks again.
  10. OK so I tried the windows 10 disk first Put disk in dvd drive ran it and pressed set up,exe A small blue screen appears with windows then preparing windows with a % gets to 100% another window appears asking for updates I decline, press next new window appears 'We're getting a few things ready then comes up with Set up has failed to validate the product key the only option is to close. The windows 10 dvd is the one that was sent with the computer, Ive checked the product code myself and it finishes with AAOEM which I assume shows that it is an OEM dvd. I then put the Repair Disc Windows 10 64-bit disc which I made but there are no exe files on it. In a nutshell then I haven't even got to the Advanced start up options!!!
  11. I have both the windows 10 disk and a rescue disk which I have made but don't know how to access the command prompt on either.
  12. I have a windows 10 installation disk. I tried to reinstall windows yesterday but it halted at the licence. I don't know why it is the disk that was sent with the PC. Happy to wait till you get back I'll see what I can do with this disk. Thanks again.
  13. Just wondering if you are around Kev. Probably at work?
  14. Not sure if you are still around Kev, I've been up since 3am so I'm going to call it a night. If you have any more ideas please let me know. Thanks for your help so far.
