  1. Just curious.....If Malwarebytes removed the virus, what caused it to not boot up after restart from Malwarebytes scan? I'm not against running a new scan but think i may wait until i get some things back-up better in case i have another booting issue. Getting ready for work now and have an appointment tomorrow so don't be concerned if it takes me a few days. Thanks, Hafiii
  2. That did it! All my "stuff" seems to be there. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! One more quick question....Can i restore to an earlier date now & would that help anything? I know the day my problems started (i saw it happen) so if i can go to an earlier date would that remove any after effects or once that kind of thing is on there it will always be until it's wiped? Also if it would help can you tell me where to find system restore? I looked but can't find it now but know it's there somewhere. Thanks, Hafiii
  3. LDTate, Ok so i followed down the instructions to warning 2. Naturally i didn't try the second hard drive. Tried bootcfg in recovery console and it gave me a list of options to add to the end. I chose rebuild but it gives me questions i don't know how to answer. Next i went to "one more suggestion" but do not know the letter to my cd drive and could not find it in bios. Next i followed the instructions under "XP crashed". I get down to adding the commands and i get "the command is not recognized" or "the parameter is not valid" when i try to enter them. Sorry but i am struggling to get anywhere. Any ideas? Thanks, Hafiii
  4. LDTate, I just tried the XP repair install. After step 4 (accepting license agreement) i get a message that says "The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer". My 3 options at the bottom are "install", "Delete partition" and "Quit". Does that mean i don't have a repair option or do i need to select C: partition1 [NTS] to get to the repair option? Thanks, Hafiii
  5. LDTate, Thanks for the reply. I read over the info in the link you supplied quickly and will again when i proceed. I had one more thing to add that i forgot in my original message and i didn't want to re-post for fear of looking like i was being assisted. I have a cloned hard drive that i made using an Apricorn Drivewire and the software that came with it. It does NOT have the files i'm looking to retrieve on it as it was made after a fresh wipe and some set up to get it to my preference. Under one of the warnings in the link you posted it said you can create a new hard drive to boot up the pc then add the non-booting drive as a slave and retrieve your info. Am i understanding that correctly or am i reading too much into that? If so would my cloned drive work for this purpose or do you still think my best chance at getting my saved data back would be the XP repair install? Thanks again, Hafiii
  6. Hi, I had my question posted in the wrong area and was redirected here. Here is the short version and you can ask for more specific details that you may need. I contracted a virus called Antimalware Doctor that i read scares people into buying their product or lack of. I researched and found Malwarebytes to be one of the best at removing it. Downloaded (free version) and ran. Found 7 or so issues and removed. All seemed fine again. 2 days later i ran it again just to double check nothing "re-appeared". It found 1 issue and needed to restart to finish. When i did that my pc will not boot up. Gets a error message: ; "Windows could not restart because of an error in the software". "Please report this problem as: load needed DLLs kernel". "Please contact your support person to report this problem". Things i have tried.....Ran Recovery Console from my Windows XP disc. Tried chkdsk and fixboot. No help. Also tried to restart in safe mode and last known good config from the F8 page with same results. I'm not against wiping and starting over but would like to exhaust all other options if possible to maybe get my info back first. Dell Optiplex GX270 - Windows XP home w/disc Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. Hafiii
  7. Hey Firefox, Just a quick question on the computer side of this......Any thoughts on how i can get this thing to boot up? I am now able to access my XP recovery console from my windows disc (which i couldn't before). Ran chkdsk and fixboot but still no luck. Also can access my F8 page now and tried to start in safe mode and last known good config but nothing. Still a "load needed DLLs kernel" error message. Or if you think this is all in the same problem as the virus i'll take it to the new post. Just wanted to ask in case you had a little trick up your sleeve (smile). Thanks, Hafiii Ohh, trying in safe mode i get additional info above my error message and 3 of the 4 lines are .dll. hal.dll KDCOM.DLL BOOTVID.dll
  8. Thanks Firefox, i will do that. Off to work now but will try later. Thanks again, Hafiii
  9. Thanks for the warm welcome and speedy reply. As i am new here i 'm not exactly sure how this works. I thought i had posted in the proper place. My computer won't power up so i thought "pc help". If i'm in the wrong area please let me know. Also being new, it "appears" the forum is made up of mostly Malwarebytes staff that offer help/assistance to common problems. Feel free to correct me if i'm mistaken. If not i'd like to put a call out to Exile360. When i found this forum i read thru some posts to try to get my question answered before i made a similar post. Several i read were assisted by Exile360 and he seemed to do an outstanding job and really knew his "stuff". Don't get me wrong, i'm sure everyone there is VERY qualified and i'll be happy with any help i can get but i was more then impressed with the problems he handled. Anyway, if i need to move this over to malware removal, just let me know. Or if that was just a generic reply and i just need to be patient and wait, i can do that also. Thanks again, Hafiii
  10. Hi all, Unfortunately i found this forum AFTER my problems. I was recently infected with a "scareware" (i think that's what i've seen it called) virus. During my research i saw that Malawarebytes was the best at removing it. I downloaded the free version and ran it. It removed 7 or 8 issues and i was happy again. 2 days later i ran it again and found 1 issue. It needed to restart to finish and when it did it will no longer boot up. Gives an error message; "Windows could not restart because of an error in the software". "Please report this problem as: load needed DLLs kernel". "Please contact your support person to report this problem". When i hit F8 to get to safe mode/last known good config the screen will come up but will not let me use my arrow keys to highlight it or my enter key. When i load the XP disc to try to fix that way it says, "Hit any key to boot from disc" but i've hit every key and it times out and still tries to boot regular (basically not recognizing any key stroke). I've seen on other post that computer info is needed or helpful so here is that: Dell desktop pc - GX270 Optiplex Windows XP Home - licensed copy with disc in hand Access to 2nd pc to help with fix Any help/ideas would be MUCH appreciated. Hafiii
