  1. Just a quick suggestion. I noticed on the Filehippo.com Malwarebytes description page, support for Windows 7 is not listed, but it is on the Technical page. Might want to update the description page to include Windows 7 as it's the first page that most folks come across when downloading.
  2. I've had no problems running AntiVir and MBAB on the same machine.
  3. I'll be cancelling my subscription with PC Magazine for reasons other than their review of MBAM. This just has to do with funds and IMO it's losing sight of the original purpose of the magazine. Their columnists make the pathetic arguement "A Mac is a PC", but that's BS IMO. You don't see coverage of new PC hardware/software in MacWorld. But with the recent popularity of the iPhone, they have to go where the money is. I'm just sick of seeing a Mac article on their main page just about every other day. Finally, not hip on the digital format. It's nice, but I suppose I'm old school and like to have a magazine in my hand. To get back on topic, I did see the review of MBAB in PC "Mac" mag, and agree, they're pro Symantec. Again, gotta' go where the $ is rather than use an objective approach. For objective PC advice, I'll look elsewhere. Finally, I'm not bashing the Mac, please don't misinterpret my intentions here, even though I do happen to be "A PC".
  4. It adds something to the "RunOnce" registry hive after an installation (free or paid). I've not paid much attention to what it adds, I've just noticed that it's there.
  5. Before Chrome entered the spotlight, Firefox was my favorite browser. I now use IE8 (with the majority of add-ons disabled) and Chrome for speed. Safari for Windows is OK, but still not there yet.
  6. While I agree that this may be partially true, there are those of use who have Automatic Updates disabled (myself included) and probably have the latest MS Security patches installed before those who have Auto Update enabled. If you're one who's diligent about keeping your system patched (I subscribe to the MS TechNet Security newsletter that's emailed as soon as the monthly updates are available), then I see no need for Automatic Updates. But, if you're prone to forget or blow it off, you should have this enabled.
  7. It looks like the Acer only has notifications for Windows Update disabled, and not Firewall and AV.
  8. Alice - You're missing a step from my post. Once in Security Center, click on "Change how Security Center Notifies Me" on the middle left hand side of the window (I believe it's in blue lettering, no button". Those are the boxes I'm referring to.
  9. AliceZ brought this up in a different thread and I figured it could use its own in case others have started experiencing this issue. After a quick scan completes, I view the items it detected, and in this case, I chose to ignore them. I then go to close MBAM and receive a pop-up window: "A scan is in progress. Are you sure you want to close Malware Bytes Anti-Malware?" I click yes and the program closes normally. I thought it might be something with the MBAM active protection, so I did the following: Uninstalled MBAM - reboot Ran MBAMclean.exe - reboot Installed MBAM - reboot This time, I didn't enter my registration key and thus there is no Active Protection nor the MBAM service. Ran another quick scan and received the same error. I'm running the latest build of MBAM with the latest defs.
  10. Update: Just did a quick scan, chose to ignore all 3 SecCenter warnings. But I did still get the "A scan is in progress, do you wish to close MBAM?", to which I answered yes and the program closed normally. Opened it back up and the ignore items are in the ignore tab, so those were saved. Not sure, this is a new behavior that I started seeing this week. FWIW, I'm not running active protection.
  11. Good, I'm glad that took care of it. Something must have moved it to to the "don'tload" key. 1. That is correct. 2. Come to think of it, I had the exact same thing happen a couple days ago. I ended up having to kill the MBAM app. Maybe one of the MBAM mods could comment on this? I really didn't think much of it. I'll try another scan today and see what happens. (I'm sure it will display the 3 "HijackSecurityCenter" warnings . . .
  12. Worst case, go into security center, click "Change the way security center alerts me", and uncheck all three boxes, which is the equivalent of changes those registry values back to a 1. MBAM does the same thing with the StartMenu. I noticed that my "Logoff" option was disappearing from the start menu. MBAM was detecting a StartMenu Hijack because my start menu had changed, which can be the result of malware. I simply had to re-check "Show Logoff" on the start menu, and ignore the start menu hijack finding in MBAM.
  13. Having these boxes unchecked does not mean that Automatic Updates is on or off, but rather that it won't notify you if it's off. Why does MBAB notify you of this? Because some malware uncheck this box without the user's knowledge. I have automatic updates disabled, and I don't want security center hounding me on this. It's simply alerting the SC notifications are disabled. If a user says "Wait, I didn't disable those notifications", it could be an indicator that malware did so without their knowledge. You may have become infected with malware that removed the .cpl file for Security Center, thus why it's not appearing in Control Panel. You can try the steps below to restore it: First off, the following procedure will launch Windows Security Center. Start -> Run -> wscui.cpl One workaround to your current problem would be to go to C:\Windows\System32, right click on wscui.cpl, and select Send to -> Desktop (create shortcut). This would at least give you a way of launching Security Center should you not be able to restore the Control Panel icon. As for the missing icon in Control Panel, run the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> regedit.exe) and navigate to the following registry key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\don't load Take a look in the right hand pane for an entry containing mscui.cpl. If found, right click on it and delete it.
  14. If you go into the XP Security center, click on "Change the way security center alerts me", and uncheck all 3 boxes, you will get those three warnings in your scan. As was mentioned, simply add them to your ignore list if you or a program disabled the notifications. Regarding Security Center missing from Control Panel, I doubt it's related to MBAM.
  15. I can't be 100% positive, but that looks like a false positive if you've disabled your XP Security Center notifications. I have all my XP security notifications disabled, and don't remember getting those items during a scan, but I do have those exact registry values (set to 0) in my registry. What I have had is a start menu hijack entry, which is the result of my enabling "Show Logoff" on the Windows start menu. I've simply added this to the MBAM ignore list.
