Deleting 'searchnu.com' virus?

Recommended Posts

This search page for 'searchnu.com' started showing up on my Firefox browser a few days ago, I didn't really notice at first. I did a google search and learned that this is a virus of some sort. I ran the free version of Malwarebytes that I have used for several years, and NOTHING showed up on it...(quick scan)...how do I delete this virus from my computer? I run Windows XP Pro. Thanks in advance.

Searchqu is installed alongside a shareware or freeware applications that are often defined as adware or potentially unwanted software. Searchqu is not a virus or any other type of malicious software. It changes your default home page to point to searchqu.com, installs a toolbar and adds additional search engine called Web Search.

Download Toolbar Cleaner.

You can also try this:

  • Hold down the Windows key and press R to open a run box
  • type the following text into the run box
    appwiz.cpl
  • This will open your Programs And Features
  • A list of installed programs will populate
  • Remove the following program:

"Searchqu 406 MediaBar"

I had this problem and managed to get rid of the program that caused the homepage to be amended, but every now and again when browsing the web a balloon will pop up in the bottom right of my screen from Malwarebytes stating it's blocked access to a malicious website. This only started happening at the same time as the 'searchnu.com' problem but seems to be persisting even after dealing with the searchnu issue. Could it be related to the same thing or is it a completely different problem? I wasn't sure how to upload a screenshot of the two balloons that pop up but the say this;

"Successfully blocked access to a potentially malicious website: 193.105.134.194

Type: outgoing

Port:54488, Process: firefox.exe"

and

"Successfully blocked access to a potentially malicious website: 85.159.232.131

Type: outgoing

Port:54488, Process: firefox.exe"

Googling the two IPs didn't really get me too much info that could help me.

Any ideas?

Hello azmandu87 and :welcome:

You may be getting these due to an add-on that you have with FireFox. You can try disableing your add-ons and see if the blocks persist. If they stop then enable one add-on at a time and test each one to see if you can find out which one it is.

Also this could be an infection that is lurking on your computer. If you want to make sure you are not infected follow the instructions below:

If you think you are infected, here are the steps needed to get your computer cleaned....

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

Don't use any temporary file cleaners unless requested - this can cause data loss and make recovery difficult

You have 3 Options that you can choose from as listed below:

  • Option 1 —— Free Expert advice in the Malware Removal Forum

NOTE: Please do not post back to (bump) your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies.

  • If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.
