System Restore is blank page

39 posts in this topic

Okay, I'm a new forum member, but I have pretty much exhausted every other means of trying to resolve this issue for my relative's home desktop computer. Here's her system's basic info:

  • HP Pavilion 061
  • Windows XP SP3 Build 2600 version 58.1.2600
  • x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel CPU ~3201 Mhz
  • 2.00 GB RAM

The current issue became apparent to me today just as I was about to download a registry program called Wise Registry Cleaner to her computer, as she told me that her computer was running very slow, but she had done a recent disk cleanup and defrag.

So, prior to my downloading the program, I went to create a system restore point. That's when I noticed that the System Retore screen would come up as a blank white screen. I googled the problem and I've done the following things to try to resolve the issue:

  • Attempted to start system restore in Safe Mode
  • Attempted to start system restore in Safe Mode with Command Prompt Option by typing %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe in command window
  • Went to http://bertk.mvps.or...ml/tips.html#21 and followed all their suggestion, which were to install/activate by typing the following in the Start>Run window:
    regsvr32 jscript
    regsvr32 vbscript
    regsvr32 /i mshtml
  • Created a new registry file called KB909889.reg per Microsoft Support and ran it (I tried to upload a copy, but encountered "You aren't permitted to upload this kind of file" message)

Here's the registry file that I created and ran:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

@="ClassMoniker"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\InprocServer32]

@="ole32.dll"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProgID]

@="clsid"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLSID]

@="{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

I know I've done a couple of more things that I found by googling the issue, but can't remember them right this moment (I've worked for over 4 hours on this!) The final thing was to download HijackThis and create a log (see attached log file).

She uses a current up-to-date paid subscription of Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 for her anti-virus, which ran a full scan just 24 hours ago. The scan logs shows no detection of any malware or virus; however, the Protection Center logs shows where Kaspersky blocks the avp.exe file on a reoccuring basis for the same two applications -- Windows NT Logon Application and Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. I temporarily suspended Kaspersky as the very first step in resolving this issue. I have run out of ideas, and from what I've read, this very likely could be some kind of infection.

Hello chopperbob and welcome to MalwareBytes forums.

Registry "cleaners" can do more harm than good. Usage of such "cleaners", tweakers, optimizers is highly discouraged. Please do not use Wise or any other.

Just kindly follow my guidance.

b) we do not use Hijackthis tool since it is way out-dated.

c) Do not try to use System restore to revert the system to an earlier state. That is not any cure for thoroughly removing malware.

Do NOT run any other tools on your own or do any fixes other than what is listed here.

If you have questions, please ask before you do something on your own.

But it is important that you get going on these following steps.

=

Close any of your open programs while you run these tools.

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, by Bill Castner, MS-MVP, a self-extracting ZIP archive from

>>> here <<<

  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close.
  • This fix may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes at your next startup. You can safely run the utility again.

Step 2

1. Go >> Here << and download ERUNT

(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)

2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts

(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)

3. Start ERUNT

(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)

4. Choose a location for the backup

(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).

5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked

6. Press OK

7. Press YES to create the folder.

Step 3

Set Windows to show all files and all folders.

On your Desktop, double click My Computer, from the menu options, select tools, then Folder Options, and then select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.

Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.

Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Step 4

Download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Step 5

Download Security Check by screen317 and save it to your Desktop: here or here

  • Run Security Check
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the command window.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; close Notepad. We will need this log, too, so remember where you've saved it!

Step 6
Close all open browsers at this point.
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
For directions on how, see How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs
Do NOT turn off the firewall
Start Internet Explorer
Using Internet Explorer browser only, go to BitDefender Quickscan website:
http://quickscan.bitdefender.com
and click "Start Scan".
Observe your browser in case it shows a notice/message bar to allow download and installation of a tool.
Allow the download and install of qsax.cab from BitDefender. Right-click the IE info bar and select Install to install the BitDefender quick scan module.
If prompted, reply yes to allow it to run.
Press the Allow button and follow prompts.
Press the "Start Scan" once more.
You'll see the EULA in a pop-up window. Click the I accept & then the OK button
Note: The FAQ is here --> http://quickscan.bitdefender.com/faq/
and that QuickScan has no removal capability.
The site boasts a 60-second scan. Do have patience as it likely will take longer.
It may seem to stall at moments, but have patience; it will move on.
You'll see a progress bar at top right of window.
Hopefully you will see a No infections found in the bar-winddow. Press the View Log button.
The log report will show in your text editor. Save the log.
Do a Select ALL, Copy. Then paste contents into your next reply.
Step 7
  • Download & SAVE to your Desktop >> Tigzy's RogueKillerfrom here << or
    >> from here <<
  • Quit all programs that you may have started.
  • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
  • For Vista or Windows 7, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.
For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Click on Scan.
  • Click on Report and copy/paste the content of the notepad into your next reply.

Step 8

RE-Enable your antivirus program.

Copy & Paste contents of Log.txt & Info.txt & Checkup.txt & log from Bitdefender & RogueKiller log.

Use separate replies as needed if logs do not fit into one reply box.

Maurice,

Thanks for your prompt response. My relative lives in another city, so I'll have to coodinate a time/date to go back and follow your steps. The only thing I won't have to do is download ERUNT and do a registry backup, as we downloaded the Wise Registry Cleaner and did a backup as this freeware has as good as, or in some cases, better reviews than ERUNT. So, the registry has been backed up.

Now, what I found interesting is the fact you recommended Random's System Information Tool or RSIT is in lieu of HijackThis, but I read here at http://en.kioskea.net/faq/4409-rsit-installation-and-first-use where RSIT actually checks to see if a current version of HijackThis is installed on the computer, and if not, it will install HijackThis as part of its installation process. I assume that RSIT utilizes HijackThis to create better logs?

Just to let you know, I have a similar, but not exact problem I discovered on my laptop computer on 1-8-2013, and I was in the process of researching how to resolve the issue when I visited my relative and discovered this issue. I'll be opening up a new post about it (can't access System Information & previous system restore points have been deleted), and right now it looks like I'll be following your steps outlined here to submit logs for my issue. Again, thanks for your prompt response, and I promise to try to get to my relative's computer as soon as possible and submit the logs.

If this machine is not yours, you should have your owner-relative join the forum and I can resume the malware hunt with them.

Keep in mind that Hijackthis has been made obsolete my recent generations of malware and has not kept up.

While RSIT does use HJT, RSIT does add additional diagnostics in the rsit reports.

Maurice,

My elderly relative would not even think of joining such a forum, so that’s out of the question. I am her “go to” person for any computer issues.

Okay, I downloaded Desktop FixPolicies.exe, by Bill Castner, and ran the file as instructed, but it did not fix the problem. As previously stated, her registry is backed up, so followed all of your additional steps and have attached (better than pasting) all created text files and logs for your review. Bitdefender found no evidence of any infection, and it's scan report, not log, is attached and called "Report 2013-01-10 13.24.22.txt". The final attached file is the text file from RogueKiller's scan, called "QuarantineReport.txt". Again, thanks for all your efforts and assistance. I’ll check this forum daily and will await your response.

P.S. - I hope to post my laptop's issue later today.

Going forward, do NOT attach log files. Always COPY all lines {via NOTEPAD} then Paste the contents into main-body of reply box.

If needed, put 1 report into a separate reply, and use as many replies as needed.

It makes more work for me, and is a bit disconcerting to have to download a file from a questionable-state system.

The report shows BitTorrent which you must remove, along with any -other- peer-to-peer sharing-program.

Forum policy on peer-to-peer-programs:

If you're using Peer 2 Peer software such as uTorrent or similar you must either fully uninstall it or completely disable it from running while being assisted here.

Failure to remove or disable such software will result in your topic being closed and no further assistance being provided.

After you have completed the above items..... then do the following.

Download >> Farbar's Service Scanner utility << and Save to your Desktop.

If using Windows 7 or Vista, Right-Click on fss.exe and select Run As Admisnitrator.

If using XP, double-click to start.

Answer Yes to ok when prompted.

If your firewall then puts out a prompt, again, allow it to run.

Once FSS is on-screen, be sure the following items are checkmarked:

  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center/Action Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender

Click on "Scan".

It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.

Copy & Paste contents of FSS.txt into your reply.

This is a report only. It is not a cure-all. There will be more to do later.

I checked with my relative and they do not have Bittorrent, or any type of torrent program, on their computer. You said that a report "shows Bittorrent", but I don't see any such thing on any of the report files I attached to this post from her computer this afternoon. However, as I write this reply from my laptop, I do have Bittorent; however, I'm not sending any attachments, just making a simple reply. Anything files I send you, such as reports or logs, will always be from their computer, which does NOT have any torrent software. Again, I'll have to schedule a trip to their house to do the next steps you suggest. BTW, if this forum doesn't want attachments, then it should permanently remove that ability in this forum, don't you think? Thanks for you support.

BitTorrent is listed in installed programs.

If you wish my help, you need to copy logs inline and not attach them. Your cooperation would be appreciated.

Maurice,

Yes, I most definitely want your assistance for this issue. I'll post all future logs "in line". Now, as you'll see from your quotes above, I assume you highlighted in red two issues you want corrected from the log reports (Java & Adobe Reader out of date, and C-drive needs defraging), is that correct? Your next reply instructs to remove the obsolete versions of Java 6 & 7, and finally your last reply instructs to download >> Farbar's Service Scanner utility << and run it and paste contents into my next post.

So, my question is, do I need to have the defrag completed before running Farbar's, or can I do that as the very last thing? I want to make sure. If so, I'll call her and ensure she gets it done correctly before I come over. I'll try to swing by tomorrow morning and get this done.

Again, thanks for all your assistance!

Disregard the notation about defrag. Those are auto-generated by the tool.

Follow my guidance on removing the old Java runtimes.

I do need to see the result from the FSS/farbar report.

Also see this MS article System Restore Tool Displays a Blank Calendar in Windows XP

BTW, do not jump into actually reverting the system by using System Restore.

I point out this article .....in case it may help -- in this case --- to see old restore points --- if indeed there are some left around.

Maurice,

In my initial post you may recall my saying I did some other things but couldn't recall at that time. Well, this is one of those things I did, and it didn't work. I'll start her defrag after doing those other tasks and generating the report for you. Thanks again!

Maurice,

Is there an option for me to check so that I get an email notification whenever a reply to this post is made? Sure would help!

You are following this topic, so you should be getting a notification. If in doubt, check your forum preferences.

Leave the Defrag for way later, after this case is resolved. please.

We 1st need to insure there's no malware around.

btw, this may take multiple sessions, over several days.

finally, try not to always quote all that I say. As much as possible, just use the reply box or the More reply Options button.

Well, I just checked the box "Auto follow topics I reply to: Notification frequency: None" and made that "Immediate". Maybe that will start notifications, but I should have been receiving them all along.

and select immediate notification (IIRC)

also on the topic itself, make sure you are subscribed.

That is about all you can do.

An hour before your post, I had already let you know I was a subscriber and that I had already done what you suggested, and I still did not get any notification of your last post. Let's not worry about that, as its not as important as this issue.

Sorry, I just realized you wanted me to subscribe to IIRC. Surely, I should have been getting notifications with all of my other checked settings (see images), so I'm not even going to bother with joining the IIRC. Something is definitely wrong with the notifications options, but its not that important. Will get you the report tomorrow. Take care

Maurice,

Sorry for any miscommunication; however, you'll see in your response that you instruct me to "Checkmark the box (line) Auto follow topics I reply to

and select immediate notification (IIRC)", along with "make sure you are subscribed", and if you'll notice my screen image for Notification Options, there isn't an "Immediate (IIRC)" option to select, just "Immediate"; therefore, I had assumed (and you and I know what "assume" means!) that there must be such an option such as "Immediate (IIRC)", but that it won't show unless I'm "subscribed" as you instructed. Anyway, just to let you know, I still am not getting any notifications to my email at all.

A) when replying, please do not use the Quote button --- unless there's a critically important bit.

b) I meant immediate notfication via forum generating -email - to you

IIRC was my way of saying, If I Remember Correctly

c) Let's forget that.

Use Start >> Run

type in

services.msc

and press Enter to get into Services console.

Review closely. Look for System Restore service and make sure it is NOT "disabled".

NEXT

Please download Windows Repair (all in one) from here.

  • Install the program.
  • Please proceed to run it. On Vista, Windows 7 or 8, Right-click the executable and select Run as Administrator.
  • Go to Step 2 and allow it to run CheckDisk by clicking on the Do It button:
    p22001645.gif
  • Once that is done please go to Step 3 and allow it to run the System File Check by clicking on the Do It button:

  • Next, go to the Start Repairs tab and click the Start button.

Maurice,

Although I had previously checked services.msc, I did it again and it shows System Restore is “Starte” and “Automatic”. A huge “bone of contention” I have with most freeware download sites is the fact that when directed to them, such as the Windows Repair, the website is filled with “misleading” download buttons that is so frustrating! It was a feat just to download Windows Repair from the majorgeeks.com site! Then, after it installs the program, it informs me that “v1.9.5 is available” and states that I should use the latest version, and asks if I want to install it, which I click “Yes”. Well, guess what? Instead of installing, or upgrading, the latest version, it redirects me to the very same exact download button I just used! So, I just stuck with what I got. Sorry, had to get that off of my chest!

It instructed to reboot her computer to run “Step 2”, and then instructed to reboot after running “Step 3”, which I did. I then clicked the “Start Repair”, which prompted me for creating a System Restore Point and to back up the registry, and asked me if I wanted to do both, and I clicked “Yes”, and it did both before starting the repair (great thing, since the whole point of this issue is that I can’t create a System Restore Point!).

Now, after a lengthy time to complete the registry backup, I clicked on the “Start” button, where the window opens displaying all of the “Repair Options”. In your post, you stated to make sure that “ONLY items seen in the image below are ticked as indicated (they’re all checked by default)”; however, in your image the “Reset File Permissions” is checked, but the default for v1.9.4 has that option as unchecked. I went ahead and checked it. Additionally, I had to uncheck the following items to match your settings:

· Repair MDAC/MS Jet

· Repair Hosts File

· Repair Icons

· Repair CD/DVD Missing/Not Working

· Repair Volume Shadow Copy Service

· Repair File Associations (see comment below)*

· Repair Windows Safe Mode (see comment below)*

* Now, in this version of Window Repair, it doesn’t have the “Repair .lnk (Shortcuts) File Associations”, but has an expandable “Repair File Associations” that expands to show another dozen check boxes. Since you show the “Repair .lnk (Shortcuts) File Associations” as unchecked, I unchecked this one, which unchecked all dozen boxes. Also, this version has a “Repair Windows Safe Mode”, which I also unchecked (see image below):

windowsrepairv1.jpg

Another thing about this version, unlike your image, this one has in bold red letters the statement “Disable your Antivirus......”, which I did prior to clicking the “Start” button.

After the reboot, I tried to access System Restore, but still can’t. Waiting for your response.
