KB2742597 won't install (.net 1.1 sec update)

18 posts in this topic

This update has failed to install about 10 times now. Short of installing all of my .net framework packages and reinstalling, is there anything else I can try?

I did a little web-searching, but it wasn't very helpful :(

Hi, MT16:

Until the geeks (esp Windows update guru Maurice Naggar) arrive, it would probably help to know your OS version and the exact error code/message you're getting.

Have you already tried the offline installer?

Several folks who had this problem recently had good luck with solutions posted in the following forums, though in some cases it did require a repair or a complete reinstall of .NET framework:

http://answers.micro...4d-1e1095bf6293 (especially perryep's method)

http://social.techne...e0-81a85a105f75

http://answers.micro...95-f831b53af42f

additional, generic info for this patch is here: http://support.micro....com/kb/2742597

Over at sevenforums.com, they typically suggest running SURT and SFC, and collecting some CBS logs in order to troubleshoot these sorts of problems.

Hopefully, you'll get it installed without having to reset Windows updates or reinstall the entire .NET Framework!

Cheers,

Please try the Seven Forums or possibly see if Maurice Naggar can assist you with this as he does a lot of Windows update support on various other sites so has a lot of good insight to the issues at hand.

Thank you DaleDoc and Ron! :) I have not tried the offline installer. I am going to try that first, then if that doesn't work, I"ll try what you and Ron suggested.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, I am not sure why the location can't be found, but, I'll be going over to Seven Forum or send Maurice a pm a little later on.

Thanks again :)

For the offline installer, you need to download and SAVE it somewhere on your computer, and then run it (that's why it's called the offline installer). :)

Instructions here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36281

Also, did you see this?

Prerequisites

To install this update, you must have Windows Installer 3.1 or a later version installed on the computer.

http://support.micro....com/kb/2742597

Anyway, this is over my head, for sure.

Unless Maurice is available to assist you, I would certainly follow Advanced Setup's advice.

BTW, sevenforums.com is only for Win7.

If you're not running Windows 7, then you'd want to use either http://www.vistax64.com/ for Vista, or a suitable XP forum for WinXP or for general computer help. ;)

Good luck,

mountaintree16:

Looking at your attached images, it is failing because the OS sees in the Registry the path to netfx.msi in a sub-directory in the TEMP folder but the file physically does not exist and so it fails.

I have run into this kind of problem numerous times on the systems I have maintained. What I do is copy the text in the "Use Source" field of the first graphic and open Regedit. Then in Regedit I would point to the Root of the Registry and search for that string in the Registry (the string being the string in "Use Source" of the first graphic). Then I would delete the key of the Registry that is found to hold it. Once I do that I am able to successfully install what was previously unsuccessful. This approach has worked with multiple applications and is a viable approach.

If you follow my directions, find the string in the Registry but you are unsure what to delete, then you can capture the screen window within Regedit and post that graphic and I can give you subsequent guidance.

Thank you David! I am a little skittish to mess with the registry, but I'm going to have a go at it now :)

David,

I searched the registry for the string in my second screenshot but it was not found. I can't seem to find it manually either.

That could be due to a syntax error 'cause it is not the exact string. Try a new search with just; netfx.msi making sure you start at the root of the registry and in some location in one of the hives.

Is the highlighted key the one I am after?

Yes but the screen capture is cut-off. We need to see the left pane under ..\Installer\Products

You are still cutting off the left pane view. :(

However, the bottom of the screen capture does show the path. Therefore I believe, that what is needed is to DELETE

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\DDE7F2BCF1D91C3409CFF425AE1E271A

That is on the left pane under the path...

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products

for you to DELETE...

..\DDE7F2BCF1D91C3409CFF425AE1E271A { as best as i can ascertain from your graphic }

Once done, you can re-execute the saved installer.
