File specified does not exist or is not visible to FileASSASSIN

Recommended Posts

I have had files and folders that were inaccessible for several months now. When using my computer the User profile that I use is set to Power User ability only. In order to download FileASSASSIN I had to go onto my administrator desktop.

The Fileassassin seemed to work fine at first. I couldn't unlock or delete whole folders, but I could delete or unlock individual .jpg type images and other file types. I could also view these pictures when on the administrator desktop. For some of the Folders and files that I tried to unlock or delete though I got this message - "The file you have specified does not exist or is not visible to File assassin. Please slect another file." Also, when I went on my personal desktop, the same pics that WERE visible weren't anymore.

More pieces of information that might help - Before trying your product I was getting one of two messages. If I tried to open the blocked folder it would say that "The file is not accessible. Access is denied" or if I tried to delete it it said "Cannot delete ___. Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and the file is not currently in use." AND, if I click on the My Computer icon the D:/ drive that I have these problems on it is colored blue.

I'm stumped by this problem. If there is anyway to fix it I would happy as a pig in mud.

  • Root Admin

Please run the following scanner and send back the logs.

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save to your Desktop

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 right click and select Run as administrator

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

I downloaded the dds.com and ran it on my administrator desktop. I gave it plenty of time to run but the same thing happens every time. The green progress bar goes about 3/4 of the way across and then the computer freezes. The wondow with the title 'DDS: Processing' will not minimize, move, or close and the mouse cannot openor close anything, including the Start button. I have tried to run it 4 or 5 times and the same thing happens every time, regardless of which option boxes I check or uncheck.

Each time it froze up, I had to restart the computer in order to run dds again. I'm stumped.

Oh,, one other thing. When I'm on the administrtator desktop, I can unlock and view the files files that have been hidden. Some I could delete and some it wouldn't let me. I can't view them on my personal desktop though.

I appreciate your help with this and if you can fix it, I will definitely buy your companies products.

Alrighty. I got the DDS to run by disabling Microsoft Security Essentials, and unchecking the Disable whitelist box (which also unchecks the Scan box at the top of the tree for some reason.) Here are the logs I got.

The logs show that you also have McAfee antivirus running on this system.

mferkdk;VSCore mferkdk;\??\d:\program files\mcafee\virusscan enterprise\mferkdk.sys --> d:\program files\mcafee\virusscan enterprise\mferkdk.sys [?]

You cannot have 2 antivirus products installed and running at the same time. If you're going to use Microsoft Security Essentials then you need to fully uninstall the McAfee antivirus.

You can download and run the following tool to possibly help with removing left over elements of McAfee

MCPR.exe

Once that is removed see if that helps resolve some of your issues and let us know.

OK. I've deleted the remaining bits of the McAffee program and did a scan with your software. It found something in the registry (?) twice called comsysapp which it says highjacks (?)

Here are the is the logs - (I've deleted extraneopus information)

After re-booting, I ran malwarebytes again and it didn't detect it. But the files are still showing the same message.

I don't have a screen shot but those were the two logs that the Malwarebytes program generated when I ran it. A window popped up and said to re-start the cmputer to remove all active threats. I just ran the quick scan and it found the same thing Hijack:Comsysapp which I highlighted in red in my last post. I also went on your website and found info on how to keep Malwarebytes and Windows Security Essentials from interfering with each other and implemented that by having each program ignore the other. (Example - putting mbam.exe into MS Security Essentials ignore list.)
