Boot problems after 1.70 update

Recommended Posts

I updated MBAM Pro from 1.65 to 1.70 and restarted the computer and everything seemed to work fine with MBAM set for real time. However, the next time that I started the computer, it stalled after the Windows chimes and would not display the desktop. I went to safe mode and restored the computer to a few days earlier and removed MBAM. Now the computer works OK. I have not reinstalled MBAM and don't want to take a chance of wrecking my computer unless I can be assured that it will work OK with MBAM real time.

I am running XPsp3, Avast Free, and Windows Firewall.

I noticed that another user was talking about regular boot problems after the 1.70 update.

Please help.

Did you try adding exceptions for Malwarebytes into your Avira Free program? You may try that and see if it corrects your issue.

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software (not sure what version of you are using):

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ mbamscheduler.exe

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

Well, if you've already UNinstalled MBAM (as you mentioned in your original post), then setting the exclusions between MBAM and Avira (as Firefox suggested) won't really apply until you reinstall MBAM.

Until Firefox returns, it might be helpful to run the DDS tool to see what might be going on.

>>>>Also, when you uninstalled MBAM did use the mbam-clean utility, or did you merely uninstall it from the Windows control panel?

If you didn't run mbam-clean, I would suggest that you download it from >>HERE<< and run it -- it will ask to reboot the computer, so be sure to do so. :)

Then run DDS (instructions below) and post back here with both logs attached to your next reply.

These will provide the MBAM staff with a bit of information that will permit them to pinpoint the cause and the solution for you.

It might just be the case that you need to cleanly upgrade MBAM, or there might be something else going on.

The logs will help to decide.

DDS Instructions

Download DDS from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop:

dds.scr

dds.com

Temporarily disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Once it is downloaded, you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click dds.scr or dds.com to run the tool, on Vista or Win 7 right click and select Run as administrator

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please attach both of the following logs to your next reply: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
You can ignore the note about zipping the Attach.txt file in most cases.

Thanks for the help and instructions.

I downloaded and tried both dds.scr and dds.com. Neither would complete after 20 minutes of waiting and eventually froze the computer. In the first minute or two, I could hear the hard drive scanning but after that nothing--no logs. I had disabled Avast and Windows firewall and nothing else was running.

Are there any services that are required for dds to complete?

What next?

Hi, greyowl: :)

Well, that's not normal. DDS normally only takes a few minutes to scan and generate logs.

It will require some additional investigation (although it appears you had a similar issue with DDS back in April 2012: http://forums.malwar...howtopic=108202 ?).

The best bet might be to have one of the expert helpers guide you through some scans, to be sure you're not infected.

Please start by following the steps described in this sticky topic: : Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.

Someone will assist you with looking further into the problem -- either in the malware removal section of the forum or at the helpdesk -- so that you can get MBAM working properly.

Thanks,
