aliza Posted August 7, 2016 ID:1055047 Share Posted August 7, 2016 Hello. I'm a teenage girl, I know the basics of viruses and computer knowledge but I'm not a genius by any means. I switched computers, and I took a chance on a shady site to download Paint Tool Sai because I couldn't find my original one. I got tons of malware, had ads playing from nowhere with audio only. I removed most of them, ran superantispyware and malwarebytes several times. I had more than 700 threats. There was a PUP called mpc cleaner that I couldn't get rid of. There was also a popup on every single program I used that would come up, trying to get me to downloaded related that other people also use. I had to run antivirus a few more times, once in safe mode, each time hundreds of threats identified until there wasn't any. Also, google chrome kept getting deleted every time I restarted my computer. Computer was working fine after running antivirus in safemode. I thought everything was gone until today. My sound randomly stopped working while playing skyrim, and I'm getting popups and redirects on steam. I tried to repair any detected sound issues and made sure everything was plugged in but it didn't work. I still had 100 tracking cookies/spyware detected on superantispyware, and on malwarebytes I keep getting 2 hijack.hosts detected. Located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. Everytime I restart my computer the hijack.hosts reappear and I have more spyware. I quarantined them, haven't rebooted yet. I enabled rootkit scan, and did another full scan and nothing came up. But I keep getting continous 'Malicious Website Blocked' popups from malwarebytes whether a browser is open or not. All are different domains from different ips, and they are outbound. Most have been located in C:\Program Files (x86)\winrule\WinRule_.exe and some are located in Windows\explorer.exe Note: while typing this my sound unexpectedly started working again? I didn't do anything so I'm not sure how long that'll last. Sorry this is so wordy. My computer has been through a lot in the past 24 hours. I downloaded farbar, here are the logs. Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted August 8, 2016 Root Admin ID:1055061 Share Posted August 8, 2016 Hello @aliza and Please read the following and post back the logs when ready and we'll see about getting you cleaned up. Before we proceed further, please read all of the following instructions carefully. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. If needed, please print out these instructions. Please do not post logs using CODE, QUOTE, or FONT tags. Just paste them as direct text. If the log is too large, then you can use attachments by clicking on the More Reply Options button. Please enable your system to show hidden files: How to see hidden files in Windows Make sure you're subscribed to this topic: Click on the Follow This Topic Button (at the top right of this page), make sure that the Receive notification box is checked and that it is set to Instantly Removing malware can be unpredictable, it is unlikely, but things can go very wrong! Please make sure you Backup all files that cannot be replaced if something were to happen. You can copy them to a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive Please don't run any other scans, download, install or uninstall any programs unless requested by me while I'm working with you. The removal of malware is not instantaneous; please be patient. Often we are also in a different Time Zone. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of the issue. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit Please disable your antivirus while running any requested scanners so that they do not interfere with the scanners. When we are done, I'll give you instructions on how to clean up all the tools and logs Please stick with me until I give you the "all clear" and Please don't waste my time by leaving before that. Your topic will be closed if you haven't replied within 3 days (If I have not responded within 24 hours, please send me a Private Message as a reminder) STEP 01RKill is a program that was developed at BleepingComputer.com that attempts to terminate known malware processes so that your normal security software can then run and clean your computer of infections. When RKill runs, it will kill malware processes and then removes incorrect executable associations and fixes policies that stop us from using certain tools. When finished it will display a log file that shows the processes that were terminated while the program was running. As RKill only terminates a program's running process and does not delete any files, after running it, you should not reboot your computer as any malware processes that are configured to start automatically will just be started again. Instead, after running RKill, you should immediately scan your computer using the requested scans I've included. Please download Rkill by Grinler from one of the links below and save it to your desktop.Link 1 | Link 2 On Windows XP Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool. On Windows Vista/Windows 7 or 8, right-click on the Rkill desktop icon and select Run As Administrator A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear, this is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully. If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2. If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs. If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know. Do not reboot the computer; you will need to run the application again. STEP 02Backup the Registry:Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so. Please download ERUNT from one of the following links: Link1 | Link2 | Link3 ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts. NOTE: Do not choose to allow ERUNT to add an Entry to the Startup folder. Click NO. Start ERUNT either by double-clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected. Click on OK Then click on YES to create the folder. Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe STEP 03 Please run a Threat Scan with MBAM. If you're unable to run or complete the scan as shown below, please see the following:MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x When reinstalling the program, please try the latest version. Right click and choose "Run as administrator" to open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and from the Dashboard please Check for Updates by clicking the Update Now... link Open up Malwarebytes > Settings > Detection and Protection > Enable Scan for rootkit and Under Non Malware Protection set both PUP and PUM to Treat detections as malware. Click on the SCAN button and run a Threat Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware by clicking the Scan Now>> button. Once completed please click on the History > Application Logs and find your scan log and open it and then click on the "copy to clipboard" button and post back the results on your next reply. aliza Posted August 8, 2016 Author ID:1055230 Share Posted August 8, 2016 (edited) I tried to log into steam and this came up. I couldn't exit out and I had to exit steam through task manager. Nothing seems to be working, chrome is still deleted every time my computer restarts. Very frustrating...I don't know what this is but it's scaring me. aliza Posted August 9, 2016 Author ID:1055257 Share Posted August 9, 2016 I ran malwarebytes and quarantined the found items, when my computer rebooted it was stuck on automatic repair loop. So I had to do a system restore back to before I downloaded Sophos.
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted August 10, 2016 Root Admin ID:1055475 Share Posted August 10, 2016 Okay, sorry about that. Please run the AdwCleaner and JRT scans again then and have them clean. Then do the following for cleaning Chrome up. I would like to reset Chrome back to defaults to completely clear out what is going on with Chrome. You can keep your “Bookmarks” if you want to keep them, but you have to export them first – >> Export Bookmarks << – Everything else should be removed. Then I need you to go to >> Google Sync << and sign into your account. Scroll down until you see the “reset sync” button and click on the button At the prompt click on “Ok”. .Reset Your Browser Settings . In the top-right corner of the browser window, click the “Chrome Menu” icon (Three horizontal lines) Select “Settings”. At the bottom, click “Show advanced settings…” Scroll down until you see “Reset settings”, Then click on the button “Reset Settings”. In the dialog that appears, click “Reset”. .Close Chrome and restart it and check it out for me please
aliza Posted August 10, 2016 Author ID:1055495 Share Posted August 10, 2016 I ran both programs, I had to restart for adwcleaner and when I did chrome was deleted again. I ran the other program, redownloaded chrome and reset it. I don't think it's a chrome only thing because for some reason firefox was deleted too, microsoft edge is the only browser that stays. Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted August 10, 2016 Root Admin ID:1055509 Share Posted August 10, 2016 Please try the following article. http://www.howtogeek.com/237527/how-to-reset-microsoft-edge-in-windows-10/
aliza Posted August 11, 2016 Author ID:1055975 Share Posted August 11, 2016 that didn't do anything, chrome was still deleted on restart and I still have viruses and malware on steam. I still have tons of threats being detected on malwarebytes that I'm scared to remove because last time I had to do a system restore.
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted August 12, 2016 Root Admin ID:1056008 Share Posted August 12, 2016 I cannot promise that something might hang, this is malware and it doesn't play well or care if removal screws up your system. Please read the following. The complexity of finding, preventing, and cleanup from malware Create a NEW System Restore point just in case you need it. Then do the MBAM threat scan and have it remove what it finds, but in post #3 above you showed an MBAM scan with nothing found. Now you're saying it is finding stuff. Can you post a log of where it's finding stuff. Thanks
aliza Posted August 13, 2016 Author ID:1056242 Share Posted August 13, 2016 It finds 13 items that are apparently PUPs, for some reason no threats show up on the log text file. I can screenshot it though.
aliza Posted August 13, 2016 Author ID:1056244 Share Posted August 13, 2016 I'm going to remove them now, I created a restore point.
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted August 13, 2016 Root Admin ID:1056249 Share Posted August 13, 2016 Okay, please create a NEW System Restore Point. Then have MBAM remove those entries and reboot. Let me know how that goes. If needed try to go forward without doing a restore. If it just won't run right then go ahead and do the restore using the new restore point you just made. Thanks
aliza Posted August 13, 2016 Author ID:1056273 Share Posted August 13, 2016 I removed them and everything is fine. I didn't have to restore. Although I don't think everything is gone because chrome was still deleted. I reinstalled steam and I haven't seen ads or signs of any malware yet. aliza Posted August 14, 2016 Author ID:1056471 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Both chrome and firefox are uninstalled, disappeared and removed every single time I turn off or restart my pc. malwarebytes just did an automatic scan and found 2 malware. Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted August 15, 2016 Root Admin ID:1056544 Share Posted August 15, 2016 Please run a new scan with FRST and make sure you place a check mark in the Additions.txt check box and ATTACH both new logs to your next reply. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop. Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer. Press Scan button. It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply. The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well. Thanks
