DCOM Server Process Launcher terminated unexpectedly

Recommended Posts

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop that continually reboots after about 30 seconds and provides the following message: "DCOM Server Process terminated unexpectedly. Windows must now restart." As others on the forum have done, I type "Shutdown -a" in the Run window to stop the shutdown, though my connect to my wireless router has magically disappeared (it requests my security key when I try to connect, which I don't want to do because I have another PC on the network that seems to be working and I want to keep it that way). I am running ZoneAlarm security suite and have done so for several years without gaps. After reading other posts, I have installed and run Malwarebytes but it didn't find anything. I have also run a full scan with ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which also found nothing. Finally, I have installed HijackThis and have pasted the log file below. If this is a virus or spyware, it's the first one that I have ever gotten. Thanks a ton for any expert guidance that you can provide.

Please temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and run the following scanner.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your
DESKTOP
:
how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

NOTE!!:

You must save and run
ComboFix.exe
on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.

Also,
DO NOT
click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:

Note:

The
Windows Recovery Console
will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click
    Yes
to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

  • Please post the
    C:\ComboFix.txt

Below are the logfiles that you instructed me to attach. In addition, here's a description of what I saw: When combofix stopped running, all of the icons on my desktop were gone and the toolbar (including start menu) had disappeared. I rebooted and they came back but the same "DCOM server process launcher" error popped up again (I used "shutdown -a" to stop it). Thanks again!!!

You have an invalid core operating system file running. This procedure should repair it.

STEP 01

Download but do not yet run ComboFix

If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy.

Download it to your DESKTOP - it MUST run from the Desktop

download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Using your mouse, Highlight and then Right-click | Copy the entire contents of the Code box below, including blank lines

KILLALL::

FCOPY::
c:\windows\system32\dllcache\rpcss.dll | c:\windows\system32\rpcss.dll

Open a new Notepad session (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled. Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and set the location to your Desktop, and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFscript.txt" .

Using your mouse, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the Combo-Fix.exe icon as shown:

CFScript.gif

  • Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
  • Disconnect from the Internet.
  • Disable your Antivirus software. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well.
  • A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix.
  • It may identify that Recovery Console is not installed. Please accept when asked if you wish it to be installed.
When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post back the Combofix log on your next reply.

STEP 02

Please temporarily disable your current Anti-Virus in order to run this Online AV scanner.

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Oh man ... I think that I may have completely hosed my laptop. I tried the combofix instructions but something went wrong in the middle of it. There was a reboot and then Combofix said that it was producing a logfile and then I got a blue screen. When I rebooted, I got an error that I should have probably written down (system could not boot because of ... I think ... a "system.ini" file or something like that). At that point, I probably should have just replied to your post but I tried to use the recovery console (created a new startup sector), which seemed to work except that my internet explorer didn't work - something about a corruption - so I couldn't continue with the instructions. The combofix logfile was there - unfortunately, I didn't get it copied to a flashdrive. I then (stupidly, I'm sure) went back to the recovery console and haven't been able to get the laptop to do anything since then. When I turn it on, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor (not a command prompt). Any ideas? If it's a lost cause at this point, I understand - just let me know. Thanks again.

Well it sounds a bit ugly. Do you have the Vista installation CD/DVD that may have come with it?

I'm assuming you have data like pictures and documents that you don't want to lose. If that's the case then you'll need to repair the drive or do some drastic fixes.

Let me know if you have an XP or Vista CD/DVD that you can use, or if you have access to another computer to download and burn a CD

-------------------------------

At this point, I think that I'll just reinstall the OS and start over. We didn't have very many files on this computer as we use it primarily for internet use. I've done that many times so I'll be fine to do it on my own. Thanks for your valiant efforts - next time, I promise to reply as soon as I see a problem instead of striking out on my own into areas that I don't really understand. Thanks!
