Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware has stopped working error

16 posts in this topic

Hi! I'm new to the forum, and I just used MBAM on my desktop to clean up Vista Guardian 2010 malware, and it worked great. I have some bigger issues (I think) with my laptop. I have no idea what kind of virus is on my laptop, all I know is that it my computer (when it actually decides to run) doesn't open to my usual desktop, but some alternate desktop, with a black background. It's not in SAFE MODE either.

When I try to run the program I get an alert that says Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware has stopped working. I renamed the file and that didn't work either.

Problem details gave me the following information, not quite sure how to proceed from there.

Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Name: abooyah.exe.exe

Application Version: 1.43.0.0

Application Timestamp: 2a425e19

Fault Module Name: abooyah.exe.exe

Fault Module Version: 1.43.0.0

Fault Module Timestamp: 2a425e19

Exception Code: 80000003

Exception Offset: 00009b24

OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3

Locale ID: 1033

Additional Information 1: 8d13

Additional Information 2: cdca9b1d21d12b77d84f02df48e34311

Additional Information 3: 8d13

Additional Information 4: cdca9b1d21d12b77d84f02df48e34311

abooyah.exe is what I had renamed the MBAM file as, just FYI. Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Thanks!

Hi, helpmePLS :P

Download OTL to your Desktop

  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
    • Change Drivers to All
    • Change Standard Registry to All
    • Under File Scans, change File age to 30

[*]Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs

    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*

    /md5start

    eventlog.dll

    scecli.dll

    netlogon.dll

    cngaudit.dll

    ntelogon.dll

    logevent.dll

    nvstor32.sys

    ahcix86s.sys

    nvrd32.sys

    /md5stop

    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s

    CREATERESTOREPOINT

    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav

    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles

    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles

[*]Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt (first run only). These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please post the contents of these files in your next reply.

Hello! Thank you for your help. I did what you said, and I'll paste the OTL.txt below. I did change the Drivers and Standard Registry to All, but when I hit Quick Scan, it automatically changed it back to the previous settings. So I ran it again, but then changed Drivers and Standard Registry to All after hitting Quick Scan, only to realize I wasn't going to get the Extras.Txt again. Sorry! Will that affect anything?

Lets try another scanner.

Download OTS.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  3. Leave all settings as they appear as default, except for the following:
    • Under File Age, select 30.
    • Under Drivers, select "All".
    • Under Registry, select "All".
    • Under Additional Scans, click on the "Extras" button.
    • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

      netsvcs

      %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*

      /md5start

      eventlog.dll

      scecli.dll

      netlogon.dll

      cngaudit.dll

      sceclt.dll

      ntelogon.dll

      logevent.dll

      iaStor.sys

      nvstor.sys

      atapi.sys

      IdeChnDr.sys

      viasraid.sys

      AGP440.sys

      vaxscsi.sys

      nvatabus.sys

      viamraid.sys

      nvata.sys

      nvgts.sys

      iastorv.sys

      ViPrt.sys

      eNetHook.dll

      ahcix86.sys

      KR10N.sys

      nvstor32.sys

      ahcix86s.sys

      nvrd32.sys

      /md5stop

      %systemroot%\*. /mp /s

      CREATERESTOREPOINT

      %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav

      %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles

      %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles

[*]Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.

[*]The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.

[*]When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.

[*]Save that notepad file

Use the Reply button and attach the notepad file here (Do not copy and paste in a reply, rather attach it to it).

No help there.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]Install the Recovery Console if prompted.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" .

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.

Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security.

Please do not install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem.

I saved ComboFix.exe to my desktop and when I tried to run it, a window pops up saying that ComboFix.exe has stopped working. Is there another way around this?

Thanks again!

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

Hi there!! I was able to run the MBAM on my computer and it deleted two infections! I've pasted below the log from the program. I haven't had a chance to do the JAVA scan, but I plan to get to it ASAP. I was wondering, what does that scan do? Anyways, thank you so much for your help!! My computer is already up and running again which is a HUGE relief, but just let me know if there are other things I need to do. I'm willing to clean my computer completely. And I'll reply again after I complete the JAVA scan.

Hello there! I ran the Kaspersky online anti-virus scanner and my laptop seems to be back on track and working well. Please let me know if I should be purchasing anti-virus protection, and if so, what kind?

I do have a problem with my desktop however, which I was wondering whether you could help with. My desktop got infected with Vista Internet Security 2010. I had previously used MBAM to clean up that mess, and I thought I'd gotten rid of all the problems, however the POP-ups are back and now it's not letting me open any program, stating that I need to create an association in the Set Associations Control Panel. I've googled this and tried to figure out how the change the associations, but to no avail. I tried Combo_fix, MBAM, AVG, etc.. but the associations seem to be blocked for everything. Do you have any ideas? The OS is Windows Vista.

Thank you again for the help with my laptop. I very much appreciate it.

Hi, helpmePLS. :D

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

Check Turn off System Restore.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

Click Apply, and then click OK..

Since the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

Please download OTC by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTC.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTC.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • This will delete the tools we used in the removal of malware, including this program.
  • If you are asked to reboot to complete the removal process then please do so

Upon restart, manually remove any remaining tools.

Create a Restore point:

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

  1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  4. ZonedOut + IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  5. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  6. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  7. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  8. ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Miekiemoes.

The full version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware protects your computer against many threats.

Malwarebytes use different ways of protecting your computer(s):

  • Dynamically Blocks Malware Sites & Servers
  • Malware Execution Prevention

Save yourself the hassle and get protected.

Best wishes! wavey.gif
