Computer starts & stops repeatedly--won't boot up...

On an intermittent basis, whenever I start my computer, it starts and stops repeatedly for several minutes, and in a couple of cases for over an hour, and may or may not FINALLY boot up and start.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be wrong? It's a three year old HP laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium, and AT&T is my ISP.

I've had this issue for a little over a week, and have just discovered this message board.

Also, is there any harm in running the computer with both the battery and the power cord plugged into a surge protector, or should I just disconnect the battery?

This is why only better computer manufacturers also provide the comprehensive hardware diagnostics for free. You have two systems. That means exponentially numbers of confusions. So, you only test one system (hardware) without the other system (Windows). Now the problem has been significantly simplified.

Your diagnostics are on the hard drive (selected from a menu of boot up options before Windows logo appears), on a provide CD, and available on the HP web site (see PC-Doctor). First determine if hardware is OK. Only then are you ready to suspect software.

Meanwhile, Windows sees many hardware problems, works around them (so you do no know it), and records those problems in the system (event) logs. If you do not know where to view them, us Window's Help to find and view those logs.

Of course, you viewed Task Manager (when system locked) to see which task is consuming so much CPU time or doing too many memory faults?

Your problem could be explained by at least 30 different reasons. If anyone does not know that many reasons exist, well, that says which replies actually come with knowledge. First you must determine which of 30+ reasons cause your problem. Fixing it comes much later.
