Malwarebyes Won't Open; HijackThis trouble

Recommended Posts

During the brief 10 minute intervals that my internet actually works a day (new house and the router is awful), I somehow contracted a pile of spyware/malware/viruses/whatever.

First I had that "Data Protection" crap that basically uninstalled my version of Malwarebytes without me knowing. After fooling around in safe mode, I got it to System Restore to a date last week. That got rid of Data Protection, for now at least.

But now I'm getting pop-ups for "Registry Defender" and after I installed Malwarebytes, it started to update and then disappeared. It won't open. I'm assuming it's being blocked.

So I ran HijackThis, but yup, more trouble. I get this error message near the beginning:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may not be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the fiel yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as Administrator'

So since I have vista, I restarted and tried "Run as Administrator" for HijackThis. Got the same error message. I let it run fully this time, and got this soon as well:

Your hosts file has invalied linebreaks and HijackThis is unable to fix this. 01 items will not be displayed.

The scan continued, and this was the log I recieved:

Hello SOH11

Welcome to Malwarebytes.

=====================

  • Please download OTH.scr to your desktop.
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click the OTH file and select Kill All Processes, your desktop will go blank
    OTH_Main.jpg
    Then select Start OTL OTL will now run
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Under Custom scan's and fixes section paste in the below in bold

    netsvcs

    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*

    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s

    CREATERESTOREPOINT

    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles

    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles

    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

====================

Download the following GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here

  • Download the randomly named EXE file to your Desktop. Remember what its name is since it is randomly named.
  • Double click on the new random named exe file you downloaded and run it. If prompted about the Security Warning and Unknown Publisher go ahead and click on Run
  • It may take a minute to load and become available.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED

  • IAT/EAT

  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically only C:\ should be checked)

  • Show All (don't miss this one)

  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
  • **Caution** Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.
  • Note: On Firefox you need to go to Tools/Options/Main then under the Downloads section, click on Always ask me where to save files so that you can choose the name and where to save to, in this case your Desktop.
  • Post that log in your next reply.

Thank you for the reply.

I did as instructed. However, with all three logs pasted, my post was too long. I am only able to post the OTL log and extras.txt. The ark.txt I have uploaded as attachments. Sorry for the inconvienence.

Note to anyone other than SOH11 these fixes are machine specific and should not be performed unless instructed to do so.

The results vary from computer to computer.

=========

First temporarily disable any antivirus program or any real time shields that are present:

If you do not know how then you can refer to this link:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

================

Then Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Rename it to kahdah then save it to your desktop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on kahdah.exe & follow the prompts.

  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt

I downloaded ComboFix and renamed it "kahdah" before saving it. When trying to open it, I got this error message:

"This application has failed to start because GoogleDesktopCommon.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"

Uninstalled Google Desktop.

Turned off all anti-spyware/virus programs (Trend Micro).

ComboFix (Kahdah.exe) runs now, but it keeps telling me that my Trend Micro anti-spyware software is still running even though I know it is for sure closed. I followed the instructions from the guide, and even went as far as to exiting out of Trend Micro all together, which gave me a warning prompt saying that if I were to close it, I would not be protected from malware, spyware, and viruses. So I know Trend Micro is disabled, but ComboFix is not reading it that way, which has me worried to run it.
