Malware Problem

26 posts in this topic

Hi, my name is Ben and I'm having a problem that I hope you guys can help me with. About a week ago I let one of my roommates use my computer while I was at class. When I returned I saw an alert from my anti-virus program telling me that there were eleven viruses/trojans/spyware problems. I downloaded and used the Malwarebytes program and thought I had corrected the problem. However, last night I saw the same thing happen to my computer but now it is much worse. I followed your steps by using Spybot S&D as well as Malwarebytes and Panda. I have the two logs from Malwarebytes and HighjackThis but I am not quite sure how to get the log from Panda.

Here is the log from Malwarebytes:

Hi again did you check this file O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {53184a8a-5ad5-4533-b3be-204bfb930c30} - (no file) in HJT to remove?

It might be your AIM that has installed Viewpoint Manager, its a nasty piece of crapware and I recommend uninstalling it. If it was installed with AIM, they will probably force install it on you again.

[msupdate.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msupdate.exe <====== That is the file you need to upload. You got something else.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msupdate.exe

Can you please send this file either as an attachment, or to the uploads site? uploads.malwarebytes.org

The file you did send along was from the prefetch que, and isn't actually executable.

I uninstalled AIM from my computer. I tried using HighjackThis to remove that file but it is still there.

I am having trouble finding the file you've been asking for. I have checked the system32 folder and cannot find msupdate.exe. I tried using the search tool and the only things I could find that matched that name are the file I sent you guys and another file called msupdate. That file is in the recovery section of Spybot S&D. Do you have any advice as to how I can find msupdate.exe?

Hi again. Do you mean you removed it with SBS&D? If so you should be able to upload it from the recovery section, I would think? Do you have your system set to show all files and folders? Search will probably not find it, you need to manually go to the location.

Please set your system to show

all files; Click Start.

Open My Computer.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.

Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.

Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Click Yes to confirm.

Click OK.

Now see if you find C:\WINDOWS\system32\msupdate.exe

Please download the following scanning tool. GMER

  • Open the zip file and copy the file
    gmer.exe
    to your Desktop.

  • Double click on
    gmer.exe
    and run it.

  • It may take a minute to load and become available.

  • Do not make any changes. Click on the top right
    >>>
    tab and select the
    Files
    tab.

  • Browse to this location
    C:\WINDOWS\system32
    and locate the file
    msupdate.exe

  • With the file highlighted click on the
    COPY
button and copy it to your Desktop as
    msupdate.exe.bad
where you can zip it up.

  • Zip up the
    msupdate.exe.bad
    file and save it as
    gmerfilecopy.zip
and attach it to your reply post.

  • You
    MUST
attach it as a .ZIP file to this forum:
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=55' rel="external nofollow">
and a link back to this post so that we can track it.

  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.

I tired this way as well as the program you asked me to download and was still not able to find msupdate.exe. I browsed to C:\WINDOWS\system32 through My Computer and do not see the file anywhere.

Sorry I have been slow responding, I have been pretty busy with classes all this week.

Ok, I haven't gotten around to doing what Raid asked yet but I just ran Malwarebytes and used the Deep Scan option after updating it. It found four infected files including one which it called a registry file infection or something close to that (also a Backdoor.Bot). Anyways, the name at the end of the file was msupdate.exe and Malwarebytes was able to delete it. If I was not supposed to do this I apologize for complicating things. I am still not able to see any pictures or icons on the internet but otherwise my computer seems to be running fine, although I am sure this does not mean I am out of the woods yet. I will still try to locate the file when I have time I just wanted to keep you guys updated.

So how are you running? Logs look pretty good. Please run HJT in scan only mode and put a check next to the following, then click fix.

O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {53184a8a-5ad5-4533-b3be-204bfb930c30} - (no file)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Reboot, updtate MBAM, run a quick scan if it's clean and your running smooth go to this next step, if not please post the log from MBAM and then the HJT log.

You are running an outdated and unsafe version of Java. You need to uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and delete the program file also. Then go here Java Update and install the correct version for your system. Choose the offline installation.

If you clean even after this we have a last step.

MBAM did not find anything however I thought I should let you know how my computer was running. I still cannot see any images online without right clicking and selecting "Show Picture". Also, whenever I turn the computer on there is a folder called COMMON that opens up. I am not sure what any of this means but I figured it was safer to tell you and post logs. From my understanding of the directions I was only supposed to uninstall Java if I was sure I was clean so I have not done that yet.

did you check O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {53184a8a-5ad5-4533-b3be-204bfb930c30} - (no file) and click fix?

Where is the folder COMMON located? What's in it? The images are a setting in IE I think.

MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16735)

Boot mode: Normal

Hmm. Okay, if I understand you correctly, most websites will not display pictures for you using Internet explorer? Does this happen when using Firefox as well?

Neither of the issues you report are actually malware. So Please uninstall the version of Java you are using and install the latest and greatest, as previously instructed.

I have uninstalled Java and downloaded the correct version from the link. I selected the O18 file in HJT and clicked fix it but it is still there.

Also, the Common file is under Program Files. It has an SIG file called helper.sig.

The image problem was only on Internet explorer and it has been fixed.

Please update MBAM and run a quick scan, post that log, and a new HJT log. Also send a copy of that strange file Please find this file helper.sig and attach it in a zipped folder here in a new topic you start, link back to your thread in the HJT forum please.

How did you fix the image issue?

Your log looks clean. We need to now reset a clean System Restore point. If you don't and you need to use System Restore you will reinfect yourself. Go to Start>Control Panel>System. Click on the System Restore tab and put a check in Turn off System Restore. Then click OK.

Now go to Start>Help and Support > Undo Changes to Your System or System Restore depending on the make of your PC. Click on what ever will open the System Restore box. You will see two options, Choose Create a System Restore Point. Give it a name like Clean Restore Point and today's date. Now if you need to use it you have it.

Many infections can be avoided with an added layer of prevention. All recommended programs are free and easy on system resources. You should install them as part of your protection arsenal. Keep MBAM and Spybot Search & Destroy and always immunize SBS&D when you update. You will also need at least one other scanning program Asquared or SuperAntiSpyware are good and there are several other excellent programs with free and paid versions. Read the overviews of what each program below does so you have an understanding of their importance and how to use.

A firewall and antivirus are also essential. The Windows firewall in XP and Vista is not sufficient.

Preform Windows Updates monthly on the second Tuesday or use automatic updates, and use your scanners weekly at the least. Always update before you scan.

Keep other software known for vulnerabilities updated also. Use the Secunia Inspector free scan to identify risks in outdated versions.

SpywareBlaster from Javacool Software

WinPatrol by BillPStudios

SiteHound by FireTrust

RogueRemover

hpHosts

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must. I use and recommend Online Armor Free

Also the full protection of MBAM is offered at a very low price, from the link in my signature.
