Rather Nasty Rootkit

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I've apparently contracted a pretty nasty rootkit. It will not allow me to run any scans--aside from HiJackThis--and I've tried a hell of a lot. AdAware, Spybot S&D, GMER, Malwarebytes, BitDefender, Kaspersky Online Scan, Abexo Registry Cleaner and others that I've forgotten. AdAware and Abexo will run intially, but freeze pretty quickly into any scan. Malwarebytes and Spybot show as running in task manager, but never show up on my screen for me to use them. I've run the Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 and it removed 80+ trojans, but this is still on the system. I've tried running ComboFix, but I have AVG installed on this computer; the rootkit won't even let me uninstall AVG--it simply freezes not very far into the install process. I'm really hoping to not have to reformat, but I'm running out of ideas here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are my HiJackThis logs:

I forgot to mention that as of last night, it apparently installed "System Tool" onto my computer. It is apparently a fake anti-virus that will not let me run any other process. I'm currently running the machine in safe-mode and "System Tool" is not running. However, the scans I mentioned earlier still do not work while in safe-mode.

Hello GrecianDelight! Welcome to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forums!

My name is Borislav and I will be glad to help you solve your problems with malware. Before we begin, please note the following:

  • The process of cleaning your system may take some time, so please be patient.
  • Follow my instructions step by step if there is a problem somewhere, stop and tell me.
  • Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
  • Instructions that I give are for your system only!
  • If you don't know or can't understand something please ask.
  • Do not install or uninstall any software or hardware, while work on.
  • Keep me informed about any changes.

For this purpose, we need regular mode, not safe mode.

Step 1

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

  1. rkill.exe
  2. rkill.com
  3. rkill.scr
  4. rkill.pif
  5. WiNlOgOn.exe
  6. uSeRiNiT.exe

Please post the log in your next reply.

Note: The log can be found at the root of your installed hard drive entitled rkill.log

Step 2

Please locate to:

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes

rename mbam.exe to firefox.exe .

Step 3

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to "Update" tab and select "Check for Updates". If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to "-Scanner" tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. RKill log
  2. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  3. a new fresh HiJackThis log

Hey Borislav, thank you for the prompt help, it is very much appreciated. I'm also going to note here that I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64bit. I restarted into regular mode and ran rkill as soon I could. So far, there is no sign of "System Tool" running, so I'm able to launch programs. It is still in my start menu, though, it just isn't running. Malwarebytes, like I said earlier, still will not run. It will show up in the task manager, but will never come up on my screen for me to run anything. I even changed the .exe to Winlogon.exe and still nothing.

Rkill log:

This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.

Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.

Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

Rkill was run on 02/01/2011 at 14:16:59.

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional

Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\InfDefaultInstall.exe

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\InfDefaultInstall.exe

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\InfDefaultInstall.exe

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\runonce.exe

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\runonce.exe

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\runonce.exe

Rkill completed on 02/01/2011 at 14:17:12.

Here is a list of programs (that I remember, at least) that this apparent rootkit will either not allow to run at all, or will quickly freeze them once I do get them open:

Malwarebytes

SpyBot S&D

TDSSKiller

AdAware

Abexo Free Registry Cleaner

GMER

BitDefender, Kaspersky and Eset online scanners

Here's a DDS log, just in case you can use it:

Step 1

  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here
  • It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so very important
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here
    • Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via email if using the Pro version
    • Launch the program and set the Protection and Registration. Then go to the UPDATE tab if not done during installation and check for updates.
Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray if using the Pro version. Now setup any file exclusions as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQ's here or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

Step 2

If not work, try to rename it as I suggest to firefox.exe and try again.

In your next reply, please include these log(s):

  1. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  2. a new fresh DDS log only

I was going to reply before I actually tried that acting like I know what I'm talking about and saying that I've already reinstalled Malwarebytes multiple times and it never works. However, I'm glad I didn't. Apparently that mbam-clean.exe is the trick. It worked perfectly and I'd like to have your babies. I sincerely regret not coming to this forum for help first. However, there is a slight problem. After finding 4 infections and cleaning them, Malwarebytes had me restart. So I did. Now it's doing the same thing it was doing before; I can't open it. I did find the log file saved in appdata, though, so I'll still post it.

Thanks!

  • Download OTL to your desktop. Otherwise, try OTL.com or OTL.scr .
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • -When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Once OTL has completed its first scan it will save notepad copies of the scans in the folder that OTL was started from. Unless set to produce an Extras log it will only produce OTL.txt in subsequent scans.

A copy of an OTL fix log is saved in a text file at

  • :\_OTL\Moved Files
    • in most cases this will be C:\_OTL\Moved Files

**Note: If you need more detailed information, please visit the web page of ComboFix in BleepingComputer. **

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper.

Please download ComboFix from

Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Open Tools -> Options -> Main tab
    • Set to Always ask me where to Save the files.

[*]During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

CF_download_FF.gif

CF_download_rename.gif

[*]It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.

[*]Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.

[*]Close any open browsers.

[*]Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the C:\Combo-Fix.txt for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

The good news is that appremover worked and it removed AVG completely. The bad news is that I've had ComboFix running for over 15 mintues and it appears to have gotten stuck while attempting to create a new System Restore point.

I ran it twice in normal mode. The second time it never got past "Combofix is preparing to run". Then I restarted in Safe Mode with networking (I'm in it now) and the same thing. I ran it for about 45 minutes each time. I read on another website that Combofix first deletes the files in the recycling bin. I think this is the problem. I cannot empty my recycling bin and everytime I tried having CCleaner empty it, it would freeze.

I tried it two more times: once in Safe Mode and once in Regular mode. I deleted the copy that I had each time and re-downloaded a new copy, making sure to it downloaded as Combo-Fix.exe. I let it run uninterrupted for 45 minutes both times. Both times it didn't get past the "Combofix is preparing to run" message. Does it try to delete the contents of the recycling bin? If it does, I think that might be the problem.

Open Notepad. Copy and paste the following text into it:

dir /a /s C:\Program Files\pPnNkIk06510 > dirlist.txt
dir /a /s C:\Users\George A\AppData\Roaming\QuickScan >> dirlist.txt
Notepad dirlist.txt

Save it as dirlog.bat at the desktop. Make sure the Save as type: is All Files (*.*).

Double click on dirlog.bat to run it. Allow if prompted by any security software.

A file dirlist.txt will appear on your main hard drive
