Update Failed

I installed the free version of malwarebytes on a computer with virus and trojans (Win XP OS). I tried to run the Malwarebytes update before I ran Malwarebytes, but the update failed. I ran Malwarebytes anyway and it went through and cleaned things out well. I noticed that Internet Explorer quit working after the virus removal (can't connect). I installed Firefox and I can surf just fine. But here is the focus of my post: After cleaning up the trojans and viruses with the free version I purchased registration for Malwarebytes for this computer. It registered fine and is now running. However, when I click on the "Update" button it tells me "Update failed" and that I need to make sure I am connected to the Internet or that my firewall will allow Malwarebytes through. I am connected to the Internet and I have turned the firewall off. Still won't update. Any ideas?

First off just so that you're aware you do not have to purchase the product to scan, detect, or clean Malware with the product. The purchased version does offer scheduling, automatic updating, live Protection, etc...

You're system is still probably infected and requires further actions.
